It’s hard to tell where the craze started or how far reaching it is, but if you are in the Mimi readership area, chances are you’ve played cornhole. The game has turned friendly, backyard barbecues into heated battles as teams go head to head for the title of “Cornhole Champion.”

And now, thanks to The Brunswick Area Chamber of Commerce, you and your teammate can have the chance to be cornhole champ of the entire Brunswick area by participating in the Chamber’s first ever Cornhole Classic Tournament on September 27, at the German-American Business Center in Brunswick.

“Cornhole is such an entertaining game and it will give us a chance to bring businesses and the community together for a day of true family fun,” says Melissa Krebs, president of the Brunswick Chamber.
This double elimination-style competition will play host to 64 teams and offer $1,000 of prize money to the top four teams. There are still a few team spots available. Individuals are also welcome to sign up and will be paired with others to make teams.

The tournament will begin at 10:00 a.m. with registration starting at 9:00 a.m. Spectators are encouraged to attend.

This event is a fundraiser for the Brunswick Chamber with some of the proceeds benefiting area high school students via scholarship money through Chamber charities.

“We will be providing a variety of different foods for purchase, from Bratwurst, sauerkraut, and German potato salad to barbequed pulled pork, French fries and gourmet cookies,” Melissa says. “There will also be soda, beer and water available.”

Boards with sponsor logos will be used during the tournament and the sponsoring organization gets to take them home at the end of the day. The  boards were provided by BigTimeGameBoards.com.

Cornhole is similar to horseshoes except you play with wooden boxes called cornhole platforms and corn bags (beanbags typically filled with corn kernels), instead of horseshoes and metal stakes. Contestants take turns pitching their corn bags at the cornhole platform until a contestant reaches the score of 21 points. A corn bag in the hole scores three points. One bag on the platform scores one point.

Scoring can be swift and the lead may change hands several times during a match before the winner is decided. The game is generally played tournament-style, with an individual or team being named the champion at the end of play.

Interested teams can enter by filling out the registration form located at the side of this page. For more information, please contact the Brunswick Chamber office at 330-225-8411, or email admin@brunswickareachamber.org.
