Have you ever noticed that a 19-year-old can get a good night’s sleep anywhere? On the floor, curled up on an old sofa, high atop a rickety bunk bed in a tiny dorm room? But something happens as we age, darling. Falling asleep quickly and staying asleep for a full eight hours is a joy reserved for the young.

Or is it?

According to Cleveland native Michael Rogoff, the founder of Montrose’s Sleep Source, difficulty sleeping often means you’re simply sleeping on the wrong mattress. And Michael should know. He’s been studying the evolving science of sleep since 1970 when he opened the first waterbed store ever opened outside the state of California—right here in Northeast Ohio. “The technology involved in manufacturing mattresses has changed dramatically over the past five to seven years,” Michael explains. “If you’re sleeping on a mattress made before 2000, you’re likely sleeping on 1940s technology, employing heavy coils and cotton felt.”

The right mattress can help alleviate a host of sleeping issues, but you have to talk with someone who knows the difference. That’s why the staff at Sleep Source will ask many questions beyond the usual, “What size and how much?”

“It’s important for us to know what your sleeping issues are,” insists store manager Joe Payne. “Do you or your sleeping partner have sleep apnea, fibromyalgia or restless leg syndrome? Do you experience tingling in your arms, hands or legs during the night? Do you toss and turn? How much space do you need? How about snoring or night sweats? All these things make a huge difference in the type of mattress you should be sleeping on.”
For example, according to Michael and Joe there are mattresses that pull moisture away from the body to reduce night sweating, and mattresses that are especially designed to eliminate pressure points to help with fibromyalgia.

“Our customers don’t just come here to buy a mattress,” Michael says. “They come here to get a good night’s sleep.”

Sleep Source is located in Montrose next to Regal Cinemas between Dick’s Sporting Goods and World Market.

And from the small store frontage you might not expect the store to be as big as it is. Inside you’ll find Ohio’s largest display of both Simmons Beautyrest and Tempur-pedic mattresses, the popular NASA-designed sleep surface that holds its shape. But you’ll also find a complete selection of Kaymed, which features a full inch of Norwegian lambs wool beneath an organic latex sleep surface.

“Many people think their mattress in fine because it hasn’t fallen apart,” insists Joe. “But if you wait that long you’ve waited far too long. We regularly help customers who thought their sleep problems were naturally occurring or age-related, but it turned out they were sleeping on the wrong mattress.”

And there’s another myth affecting our sleep—the price. “Some people have been told that the most expensive mattress they can afford is the one they should buy, but that’s not necessarily true,” Michael offers. “It doesn’t matter how much you pay if it’s not the right mattress for you. That’s why it’s so important for us to understand each customer’s concerns. Often the best mattress to alleviate your sleeping problems is not the most expensive.”

Sleep Source has adopted an “every day low price” strategy. That means its mattresses are priced lower than the sale prices you often see advertised at large chains and department stores. “I’ve been selling bedding for 36 years and I know the reputation our industry can have,” Michael admits. “That’s why we work so hard to be different. We offer the nation’s top brands at low prices every day. You never have to wonder if you got a good deal. You always do.”

Michael is so sincere about his store’s service and pricing that he offers one of the most aggressive warranties in the industry.

And, if you get your mattress home and find that you don’t like it, Michael will take it back. “We’ve been offering this guarantee for over five years and we’ve had virtually no returns,” Michael insists. “Our duty is to sell you the right mattress in the first place. If we do that, you won’t want us to pick it up.”

Once inside Sleep Source, you’ll quickly notice that the store is a lot more than mattresses. You’ll find a large selection of beds and bedroom sets, from simple headboards to rich, luxurious solid wood beds perfect for today’s larger and more contemporary master bedrooms, but at prices far less than high-end furniture stores.

And if you want one piece but not the entire set, that’s okay. You can mix and match all you want or walk out with a single piece.

And Sleep Source has quickly become known for its children’s bedroom furniture, including the popular New England-made set featuring stairs (not a ladder) that lead to the top bunk. Each stair is also a drawer for storage. Under the bed can be a study area, a playhouse or more room for storage. The entire set comes in durable, easy-to-clean mica in your choice of custom colors.

“Kids love these, but so do their parents,” Michael smiles. “We’ve even heard customers say, ‘Wow. I don’t even have kids and I want this.’ The set is so well built you’ll still have it when your kids go away to college.”

And speaking of college, darling, just because you’re no longer a college student, doesn’t mean you can’t sleep like one. Here’s where you’ll find Michael and Joe:
