Cabinetry is the pillar upon which every great kitchen or bath renovation is built. They take up the most space, often account for the biggest chunk of the budget, and even promise beaucoup unseen benefits in added functionality.

So when the Guhde family of Guhde Flooring America opened its Kitchen and Bath Design Center last year, they selected the finest manufacturers of cabinets that marry best-case functionality with design brilliance. Cait Rudolph—who oversees the Design Center—reveals what makes a cabinet good, better or best.

“Our range of cabinets appeals to every taste, from traditional to transitional, craftsman to contemporary, or an eclectic mix of styles,” she explains. “It’s not enough to just have wow factor. People want function and that happens with a great kitchen design that includes task lighting.”

Cait shows clients how to coordinate cabinets with other elements in their design, from lighting to backsplash and even hardware. (Don’t miss Guhde’s new Hafele line of inspired kitchen hardware and accessories, which just won the 2018 Readers’ Choice Award from Kitchen and Bath Business Magazine.)

The Good
“Even with our basic line, Mid Continent Value, there are so many choices in selection, including eight door designs and eight colors, and the materials have come a long way. Particle board has long been the standard, but now it’s more durable and functional than ever,” says Cait.

The Better
“Also from Mid Continent, the full-access Vista line offers different materials such as melamine, laminate and acrylic with modern finishes and more storage. The doors pop off for easy cleaning, and there are more opportunities for customization,” she reveals.

The Best
“The quality of the plywood, up to three-quarters of an inch, provides a heavier, sturdier cabinet. And the sky’s the limit in terms of customizing these Fieldstone cabs. Any paint or stain color and technique, such as Old World distressing, is available. Anything you can imagine, we can create,” Cait assures. “There are also different door fronts we can go with, such as mullions, glass or metal, to define an area in the kitchen and make the design more visually interesting.”

“What goes on behind the cabinet doors is just as exciting as how the cabinets look,” she says. “We invite people to come into our showroom to check out all the latest functions that bring dream kitchens and baths to life.”
