Consider a second pair of eyes

It’s important to review your estate documents at least every five years.

Everything in life is eventually touched by change. People, circumstances, relationships, marital status, family status, your job…all of these can evolve and differ over time. That’s why it’s important to review your estate documents at least every five years, says attorney Linda Nabors, who works with her husband, Jay, who is also an attorney, at Nabors & Nabors, the Strongsville-based law firm where attorney John J. Urban is of counsel.

“It’s important to make sure your will, durable power of attorney, living will, durable power of healthcare and transfer on death designation affidavit are all current,” she suggests.

If you haven’t had a major life change, do a quick review of your documents at home, just to make your wishes are still able to be carried out by the people you’ve named and that those wishes are still applicable to your current situation.

But if you’ve experienced, say, a divorce, family death, birth of a child, marriage, change in relationship or other major life event, Linda suggests you consider scheduling a free document review with her or Jay.

“It’s always good to have a second pair of eyes take a look,” she smiles.

“Is the guardian you’ve named for your children still in your life? Is your house titled so it automatically transfers on death instead of going through probate? Do you still want your savings to go to your granddaughter? These are just some examples of things to consider keeping current in your documents.”
