With each insurance carrier touting the many benefits of its own plan, and some even insisting they can offer zero-dollar premiums, how can you be sure you’re getting the coverage that’s right for you?

Right about now, you’re probably getting inundated with information about Medicare via TV, the internet and the U.S. mail. With each insurance carrier touting the many benefits of its own plan, and some even insisting they can offer zero-dollar premiums, how can you be sure you’re getting the coverage that’s right for you?

In my experience, you rarely get something for nothing, so while a premium may be “zero,” the out-of-pocket costs and policy gaps could end up costing you more than if you had a low-premium policy.

On the other hand, the zero-dollar premium might be of benefit to you.

The point is, you really can’t make a determination about Medicare coverage based on a television ad or mailer. And you can’t choose based on the coverage a friend or neighbor is enjoying.

The best way to choose your coverage is to sit down with a licensed insurance agent experienced in Medicare and review all of your doctors and medications, your budget, the kind of coverage you’d like, what your other expenses are, whether you want dental and vision coverage, and so on.

Some plans include the cost of prescriptions, dental and vision, while others do not. The beauty of Medicare is you can choose the items that matter to you most, and pay for those separately as your budget allows. It’s called filling in the gaps.

Because your plan may have changed, if you haven’t had a review of your Medicare plan in the last year or two, this is the time to do it. And, my guidance is free.
