“Age enhances wisdom, but, unfortunately not appearance,” says Dr. Matthew McDaniel of Fairlawn Aesthetic MD.

Dr. McDaniel has a great many options to offer his clients who refuse to allow their best appearance to succumb to the effects of age. Among the options Dr. McDaniel makes available to his patients is a relatively new product called NovaThreads, which are used in the procedures named NovaLyft and NovaMesh.

What Is It?
According to the manufacturer, Nova Threads are synthetic absorbable surgical suture threads composed of polydioxanone. These “PDO” sutures are used to perform cardiothoracic surgery (such as open-heart surgery). It’s one of the safest materials to be implanted in the body.

Blunt cannulas are preloaded with a PDO absorbable thread of a diameter slightly larger than what would be used in a surgical application. These cannulas are used to place the NovaThreads at a sub-dermal level, running parallel to the surface of the skin above. Once placed, your skin fully absorbs the thread within four to six months.

What Does It Do?
Selective inflammatory response is the principle behind many aesthetic procedures (such as a fractional laser and micro needling).

“Our skin is very good at repairing itself, and by inserting NovaThreads your skin is made to ‘heal’ itself by creating new collagen, naturally,” Dr. McDaniel says.

PDO is fully absorbable, but that doesn’t mean your skin won’t react to it. During the four to six months needed to fully absorb the PDO suture, your skin is also repairing itself around it. It’s “controlled healing” and it’s happening underneath the skin.

How It Works
A beautiful and healthy face has a “V” shape. With the aging of tissues and the action of gravity, this “V” shape diminishes or inverts. The idea behind the NovaMesh and the NovaLyft techniques is to either create a scaffolding in order to support the tissues and keep them in the “V” shape, or, where necessary, to delicately lift the tissues and reposition the skin to recreate the “V” where it’s been lost.

“NovaLyft is utilized to produce a more dramatic and immediate result,” Dr. McDaniel says.

“The PDO sutures have barbs or cogs, which provide a grip underneath the skin. The threads create an instant skin repositioning. The skin will then build new collagen which will secure the lift.”

NovaMesh consists of creating a mesh under the skin (i.e. two threads inserted vertically and three threads horizontally), sort of like a hashtag or a net. This mesh will serve as the foundation for the new collagen production. The NovaMesh tightens the skin naturally from within. Results appear naturally, without any drastic change.

Why We Love It
NovaThreads are a less radical and less costly approach to the restoration of a youthful facial appearance versus plastic surgery.

The treatment can be performed in as little time as it takes to break away from the office for lunch. There is minimal discomfort and virtually no down time.

Is It For You?
While ideal for most, there are some circumstances where a different treatment vs. NovaThreads may be preferred. A consultation with Dr. McDaniel will help you to determine what is best for your situation and how you can have your youthful appearance restored.
