Founded in 1964, The Village of St. Edward campus in Fairlawn has evolved over the years to include extensive facilities for independent living, as well as a myriad of options for supported and assisted living, including a rehabilitation and nursing center for round-the-clock care and memory care units.
“Our faith-based, not-for-profit community is a place seniors can call home, with a welcoming atmosphere that caters to their physical, spiritual and social needs,” says Annette Walters, corporate director of marketing.
The buildings within the campus underwent a major renovation a few years ago and look like new. Independent living offers 77 one- and two-bedroom options, assisted living includes a mix of 73 one-bedroom and studio apartments, nursing care includes 81 units and the secure memory care has 28 units.
A host of amenities include a resident-run Sundry Shop offering food and necessities, a fitness center that holds a full slate of yoga classes and dance exercise, a wellness center and well-appointed beauty shop.
“Although we offer spiritual support to Catholics in the form of daily mass, Bible study and carrying out the sacraments, we also provide plenty of non-denominational support to our many non-Catholic residents, including monthly Spiritual Potpourri gatherings with Sr. Barbara and services from area ministers,” says Annette.
Meet Mary and Ruth
Like most residents at The Village of St. Edward, Ruth Kalish and Mary Krueger always have a smile on their faces.
“We like to stay active, get out in the community, go shopping, and, most of all, we like to have fun,” says Mary. “At our age, we’ve come to appreciate each other, and make the most of every day.”
Friends like to gather around the tables for meals and lively discussions, and the caring staff often joins in.
“Especially after dinner each evening, groups of us get together for cards, or bingo, or knitting,” says Ruth. “This is truly a friendly and caring environment.”
That feeling of community extends to the residents’ families, too, and Ruth says that the village is a welcoming place for their kids and grandkids to visit them.
“No one wants to be a burden to their children,” says Mary. “Our kids have peace of mind that we are safe and happy here. We all wear pendant alerts. Everything is done for us. It’s hassle-free living. They know we are joyful and thriving.”
Field trips vary with the seasons. Recent ones included a tour of Stan Hywet, Summit Mall for shopping excursions (Mary’s favorite), and visiting area churches and cathedrals with resident chaplain Fr. Novak.
The ladies note there are always interesting programs, with speakers and musical entertainment brought in.
A cherished annual event tentatively set for next month is the Mother’s Day luncheon and mother/daughter fashion show, which attracts more than 200 residents.
According to Annette, “This is not your traditional fashion show. This year, residents will be showcasing an array of vintage purses. All these purses tell a fascinating story. One vintage hat was actually brought through Ellis Island from Italy by a resident’s mother immigrating.”
You Won’t Outlive your Funds Here
The Village of St. Edward is a compassionate haven for seniors, and Annette explains no one will ever be asked to leave if they run out of funds.
“Our staff treats the residents like family, and you wouldn’t treat family like that,” she says. “In keeping with our Catholic values and commitment to community, we will never turn anyone away if they outlive their funds.”
