If weighing whether or not heated floors are worth the cost, you should also consider that kitchens and bathrooms provide the highest return on investment from a renovation standpoint.

When heated floors came onto the market about 15 years ago, they were the ultimate luxury. Today, as demand has risen, the price has come down.

We caught up with Shawn Rosa, sales manager at Guhde Flooring America in Painesville, to learn more.

Q: For someone thinking about renovating, are heated floors worth it?
A:
I would say one of the main reasons people do not want tile floors is because they think they’re cold. That’s unfortunate. Tile is the most durable and long-lasting type of flooring available.

Gently warming tiles with radiant heat is the perfect solution. With technological advancements that make for easier installation, the price has come down to something homeowners can easily afford.

One of the best electric systems on the market is Ditra-Heat by Schluter. We like it because it submerges nicely within the subfloor and people can customize the area to heat.

There are three types of thermostats, which are in the room, traditional with an on/off switch, programmable to set the heat to come on before you want the floors warmed in the morning and a touchscreen.

We also install heated floors in walk-in showers—with the trend in showers getting bigger and bigger—and even on shower benches for a spa-like experience. People like heated floors in kitchens and basements, as well as four-season room additions.

If weighing whether or not heated floors are worth the cost, you should also consider that kitchens and bathrooms provide the highest return on investment from a renovation standpoint. This luxury might just pay for itself when you go to sell.
