Are you ready to trade in the white landscape for a little green? But what kind of shape will your lawn be in after its long winter’s nap?

Correy Petz, founder of EverGreen Turf Solutions in Medina, says now is an excellent time to hire a turf management company so you aren’t scrambling to get on someone’s schedule come spring. He says he founded EverGreen as a means of filling a niche.

“I saw the need for a local, family-owned, relationship-based company that focused on personalized customer service and a passion for a job well done,” says Correy.

“The business practices of the national lawn care providers just don’t resonate with folks anymore. There was a door to be opened for someone local to step up and fill that need, so, we opened it.”

He mentions that on every street there is that one house with the greenest, lushest, most spectacular lawn, that’s the envy of all the neighbors. “Our goal is to make all of our customers’ lawns look like that one,” he says.

Making Your Lawn Lush
Your grass is barraged with obstacles to overcome throughout the year, but there are a few things customers can also do to help treat the cause.

“Mow the lawn properly and we’ll take care of the rest,” says manager Mitch Anderson.

“Be sure to mow frequently when the grass is growing fast in spring. Don’t ‘take off’ too much grass at one time, be sure to mow at the appropriate height and sharpen those mower blades to start the year.”

“At the end of winter, we’ll be seeing snow mold, which creates white patches on the grass,” reports Correy.

“It’s caused by heavy snow sitting on grass that was left long in the fall. Usually, a light raking will help get rid of it, as the turf starts its regular growth cycle. To prevent snow mold, we recommend mowing shorter during the last fall mowing.”

And though it’s difficult to pinpoint just when spring will break, generally you should put down the first lawn treatment in mid-March through April, just as the lawn is waking up from its winter slumber. And it should always contain pre-emergent crabgrass control.

Correy notes that, “the window has to be timed just right when applying the crabgrass pre-emergent, and if it’s too late, crabgrass can be difficult to control later in the summer. That’s why they call it the summer spoiler. For this reason, the spring lawn application is one of the most important applications of the year.”

Through EverGreen’s six-step program, lawns are fertilized every four to six weeks, spring through fall.

“Everything needs to be fed the right diet to live and thrive, and a healthy green lawn is no exception,” Correy says.

“A chain reaction is created when the proper nutrition (fertilizer) is applied in a timely manner to keep it at peak health. The lawn becomes denser and the grass roots deeper in the soil. In turn, the lawn will have superior, longer-lasting color and will resist insects, diseases and summertime heat stress better.”

The products EverGreen uses are different than any you’d buy at a store. The team uses a combination of liquid treatments and time-released granular to combat specific problems.

“We truly care about our clients, and they get that,” says Correy.

“We feel very lucky to have grown so much through people telling their friends and family members about the job we do. People often tell me they think of EverGreen as a ‘throw-back’ company, reminding them of how customers used to be treated in the good old days.”
