If you catch Covid, it will be very difficult, if not impossible, for you to get your affairs in order

Now more than ever before, it’s important that everyone have their affairs in order.

“I remember just a few months ago in one of my articles saying the chance of you or someone you love getting Covid was very slim,” laments Jay Nabors, a Cleveland-based attorney who focuses on estate planning.

“That obviously has changed. Now more than ever before, it’s important that everyone have their affairs in order. We all understand that the chances of passing away from Covid are less likely than simply catching it. But the grim reality is that none of us really knows how, when or if we’ll be impacted. With that in mind, as important as it is to have a last will and testament, it’s equally crucial to have a living will and a durable power of attorney for healthcare and finances.”

Here’s a scenario Jay describes as being a very real concern. “If you catch Covid, it will be very difficult, if not impossible, for you to get your affairs in order. For the durable power of attorney for healthcare and finances, as well as a living will, you need two witnesses and a notary. For a last will and testament, you need two disinterested witnesses. Who are you going to find to witness and notarize your documents if you’ve got Covid? Nobody. That’s why now is a perfect time to do a review to ensure everything is current on your documents, like your executor and heirs.”

And if you don’t have your estate plan in order, this is the perfect time to get that taken care of.”
