On the eve of our nation’s birthday, Judy G. was looking forward to the next day’s July 4 patio party at Huntington Square Senior Apartments, in Medina.

“Everybody will be bringing something,” anticipates Judy, who adds that social activities are important to her and other seniors.

Judy is a relatively new Huntington Square resident, having moved into the senior living community on April 1. She’s new to Medina but had lived in Ohio for 46 years before she and her late husband sold their home and retired to Florida. After recently losing her husband, she came back north to be closer to her children, including a son who lives in Medina.

“One of the reasons we moved to Florida is because we wanted a more active life,” she shares.

“I think that’s true for most seniors. There was so much to do, from golf to other social activities. And there are a lot of activities here—and a lot of new people to meet. There are so many new people moving in that it’s hard to keep up. From talking to other residents, I find that it’s very often the case that people returning from Florida enjoy living in a place like this with lots of conveniences.”

Judy especially enjoys the speakers who come to talk to Huntington Square residents.

“Several weeks ago, the mayor (Dennis Hanwell) was here talking about the city of Medina and telling us about the plans for the community,” she says. “He covered a multitude of subjects. I enjoy the speakers very much.”

Proximity to her son prompted Judy to look at Huntington Square. She was immediately impressed.

“I liked the idea of new construction (Huntington Square opened in September 2017), and it’s a lovely, well-maintained facility,” she says.

Located in a quiet, residential area of Medina, Huntington Square Senior Apartments offers a multitude of shopping and dining options close by, says David Woodrum, district manager of Clover Management, which operates Huntington Square and four other senior living communities in Northeast Ohio, with a new facility in Lorain soon to open.

“Our 55-and-over communities offer an affordable, independent living alternative for people who love their homes but no longer want to deal with the hassle of mowing lawns, shoveling snow and fixing leaky roofs and faucets,” David explains. “We offer all of the amenities that are important to people, without them having to break the bank.”

While many amenities are within convenient walking distance, a number of Huntington Square’s residents drive their own cars.

“This is not assisted living,” he emphasizes. “Most of our residents are very active, but want to live in a peaceful, safe environment where they don’t have to worry about mowing the lawn or doing routine maintenance. One reason why our rent is so affordable is because we don’t include three meals a day in our lease. Many senior communities include meals but they charge between $3,000 and $4,000 per month. At Huntington Square you can eat where and when you want to, with apartments starting just under $1,000 per month that’s $2,000 to $3,000 less per month and we include all utilities.”

Huntington Square’s one- and two-bedroom apartments are spacious and include a stacked washer and dryer.

“Many people like to bring their dinettes and china cabinets from their house,” David says. “That’s one reason why our apartments are designed to optimize living area. They feature an open floor plan with roomy kitchens, walk-in showers, grab bars and other conveniences.”

The communities offer on-site beauty salons and fitness rooms, and have large community rooms where residents can gather for games, movies, parties and other social functions. Residents who want to host a large gathering can reserve the “family room.”

Those amenities attracted Tonya D. to Huntington Square.

“What impressed me the most is that it is just like a community,” says Tonya, who moved in this spring. “The fitness room and the community rooms are nice, and the management is wonderful. They are there to help with anything you need. I like the fact that they make the renting process so easy. The transition was very smooth for me.”

Tonya was originally from Northeast Ohio but spent the past 30 years in Michigan. This spring, she moved back to the area for treatment of a medical condition. The location, she says, is perfect because it’s close to Medina Hospital and close to her nephew, who lives in Brunswick.

“I absolutely love my apartment,” she says. “I was impressed that they didn’t put in cheap carpeting like most apartment buildings do, and of course I like everything being brand new.”
