Some seniors simply refuse to accept physical decline as a natural progression of aging, and research into the science of exercise is making that easier than ever.

“Science has shown us that focusing on muscle mass and strength is the key to aging longer and better,” says Jeff Tomaszewski, founder of MaxStrength Fitness studios. “And the most efficient modality to building muscle mass is to fatigue the muscle, max it out, and allow it a few days to rebuild.”

This is the transformative premise that he’s built his successful studios on—20-minute workouts, twice a week—with legions of members who attest to the profound effect on their strength and fitness levels.

No Sweat? No Shower? No Problem
Members tend to stay with MaxStrength Fitness for a long time. Here’s why: Though the sessions are intense and challenging, there are lots of appealing upsides. For instance, there’s no sweating involved (studio temps are pleasantly set in the 60s), so you can pop in on your lunch hour and head back to work without needing a shower afterward.

And make no mistake, this is a science-driven, elite level of training. Via precision computerized exercise machines, the trainer-led workouts are constantly changing and adapting to each client efficiently and safely.

“Every level of our clients’ overall wellness is improved,” says Jeff. “They become stronger, gain muscle mass, flexibility and energy, and lose body fat. They report they even sleep better.”

Meet 70-something Kathy Gabler
“Coming from a career as a female high-level HR executive, with 36 years at Eaton Corporation, Kathy is no stranger to overcoming obstacles and putting the right steps in place to achieve success,” says Jeff. “She plans to stay very active through her senior years. And when she’s not going gangbusters with workouts with her upbeat, work-hard-play-hard attitude, she can be seen striking up personable conversations with other members in the lobby.”

Not only does she drive from Richfield to work out at MaxStrength twice a week, Kathy also hikes six miles a day in the Metroparks and does things most seniors do not. In fact, the day before she sat down to chat with me, she said she had painted her garage by herself floor to ceiling.

“I love coming here because the workouts are exactly what I need to stay motivated,” says Kathy. “My muscles are fatigued, but never strained. I used to work out with a trainer and would be sore for days afterward. That never happens here.”

She mentions that preventing falls is one of the biggest reasons she comes here.

“I have friends who have experienced falls and their health in general declines afterward,” she says. “Balance is really important to me. The trainers are experts at balancing my upper and lower body muscle groups, all stabilized by a strong core. And flexibility matters, too. I plan to keep doing the things I’ve always done for a long time.”
