Durability, functionality and uniqueness are three important factors that every woman looks for in that “perfect handbag.” Such a handbag didn’t exist at one time for Sarah Larson, the creative mind behind Ellie Jane Bags—so she created her own.

“I’ve always been drawn to create things that are functional and practical,” Sarah explains. “I love the process of making and creating, but I knew that if I was going to work hard to make something, I wanted to be able to get some good use out of it.”

So inspired the creation of Ellie Jane Bags.

“I made my very first bag while I was in college,” smiles Sarah. “I wore it until it fell apart and just kept making one to replace it.”

Eventually Sarah discovered waxed canvas, which proved to be the perfect material for her bags. Waxed canvas is a durable, stain- and water-resistant material that ages well. Sarah says it gains a unique look over time.

Sarah comes from a long line of sewing enthusiasts, including her mother and grandmother.

“I was amazed at what they could create out of a pile of fabric,” exclaims Sarah. “I didn’t start sewing myself until college, but I understood why they loved it so much. Through creating, you can add a little bit of your personality to your project.”

Sarah has a background as a special educator. She decided she wanted to set an example for her only daughter and show her that Mom is brave and bold, so she quit her full-time career and embraced Ellie Jane Bags as her livelihood, befittingly named after her daughter.

“She loves to be by my side while I build bags,” Sarah grins. “I am so blessed to be able to create what I love for others and also to have my daughter alongside me, watching and growing.”
