Veronica H. loves to talk about her “neighborhood.”

“We care about each other here,” she says. “We have so many spontaneous activities we do together, and we watch out for each other. If we haven’t seen somebody in a while we’ll go to their door to check on them, or bring them a piece of cake from a birthday party.”

Veronica’s neighborhood is the Glenwood Square senior living community in the village of Reminderville. It is conveniently on the Reminderville/ Twinsburg border right behind the Reminderville Athletic Club.

The outgoing, 72-year-old book editor moved to Glenwood Square almost a year ago, leaving another senior living facility that she found dull and lonely.

“This is so much different from where I was,” she emphasizes.

“We have this wonderful community room where people congregate all the time for games, movies, music and all types of activities. Sometimes they’re on the calendar and sometimes they’re spontaneous. Somebody might put on a movie and everybody just gathers around to watch. There is always something to do here.”

Last Christmas, Veronica’s neighbors were intrigued by a Christmas ornament she had made for the tree. She showed them how she made it and since then she and her 14-year-old granddaughter have hosted monthly craft nights.

Her one-bedroom apartment, she says, is spacious.

“The bedroom is large enough to double as my office,” says Veronica, who started her own book editing business at the age of 65. “I’m working on three books now.”

Located in a quiet village, Glenwood Square offers a multitude of shopping and dining options in nearby Twinsburg or Solon, says David Woodrum, district manager of Clover Management, which operates Glenwood Square and four other senior living communities in Northeast Ohio, with a new facility on Lorain soon to open.

Many of Glenwood Square’s residents drive their own cars into town, he says.

“This is not assisted living,” David emphasizes.

“Most of our residents are very active, but want to live in a peaceful, safe environment where they don’t have to worry about mowing the lawn or doing routine maintenance. One reason why our rent is so affordable is because we don’t include three meals a day in our lease.

Many senior communities include meals but they charge between $2,500 to $3,500 per month. Here, you can eat where and when you want to, and two-bedroom units start at around $1,000 per month and include all utilities.

You can buy an awful lot of groceries for three thousand dollars a month, and, besides, who wants to eat at the same place three times a day for the rest of their life?”

Glenwood Square’s one- and two-bedroom apartments are spacious and include a stacked washer and dryer.

“Many people like to bring their dinettes and china cabinets from their house,” David says.

“That’s one reason why our apartments are designed to optimize living area. They feature an open floor plan with roomy kitchens, walk-in showers, grab bars and other conveniences.”

The communities offer on-site beauty salons and fitness rooms, and have large community rooms where residents can gather for games, movies, parties and other social functions. Residents who want to host a large gathering can reserve the “family room.”
