Let’s face it, everyone loves a deal. That is what has spurred the proliferation of big box stores and online shopping. But when it comes to professional hair care products, your local salon is your best bet.

“People think they are getting a better price when buying online or at a discount retailer, but Redken has found that products sold in salons actually cost 10 percent less,” says Coleen Morlock, who, along with her sister, Mary Kay Hallas, owns VCS Salon & Spa.

And it is not just the price that’s different. The actual product may not be the same.

“Oftentimes when you buy salon products elsewhere, it may be a diverted hair care product,” notes Coleen. “Sometimes these products are outdated, counterfeit or stolen. But when you purchase a product at our salon, you are assured you are getting the real thing.”

“Just like there are lots of fake purses online, there are fake hair care products, too,” adds Mary Kay. “Sometimes people who want a Louis Vuitton purse knowingly buy a fake one because it is cheaper and looks just like the real one. However, when it comes to fake professional hair care products, the bottle looks the same, but what is inside is not the same. You need to be more cautious with the products that you are actually putting on your body.”

Using Professional Hair Care Products
At VCS Salon & Spa, you will find shelves stocked with products in the reception area. An official Redken salon, the stylists are knowledgeable about the multitude of products from this leading hair care brand—along with Pureology, DevaCurl and Brazilian Blowout products.

With so many hair care products, it can be confusing to know which is best for your hair type. When it comes to shampoos, there are some made specifically for color-treated hair, fine hair or curly hair, as well as dry shampoos and vinegar hair rinses. And when it comes to styling aids, there are even more options.

“Our stylists are licensed, trained and educated specifically on products so they know what your hair needs,” says Coleen.

Currently the top selling products in the salon are Pureology Color Fanatic, a leave-in conditioning spray; Redken Guts volumizing spray foam; Redken High Rise, a volumizing shampoo; and DevaCurl Gel and Shampoo, for those with naturally curly hair.

VCS Salon & Spa owners and sisters Coleen Morlock and Mary Kay Hallas say the key to getting the most for your money is to buy hair care products directly from the salon.

“There is a big difference in the ingredients of professional salon products versus other products,” says Mary Kay, who helps train new hairstylists. “Cheaper products are full of waxes and have high alkaline, which results in build-up on the hair.”

“If you buy a brand-new outfit, you don’t go home and wash it in hot water and bleach and ruin it,” she adds. “So why would you not shampoo and style your hair with professional products after getting your hair cut or colored to keep it looking its best?”

Buying Local Supports Your Community
Shopping locally for hair care products at VCS Salon & Spa helps support your stylists. The VCS team has traveled to New York City for advanced education and training to become experts in their craft.

The VCS Team

“We are so happy that our team has been provided with this wonderful opportunity. This training is essential in helping our stylists take their talents to the next level for our clients,” explains Mary Kay.

“By purchasing your hair care products directly from the salon, you’re getting expert advice about your hair and how the product will benefit it, while also helping your stylist gain even more knowledge in the field.”

And, in turn, helping your stylist helps the salon give back to the community.

“VCS Salon is super committed to the community, and when clients support us that allows us to give back to the community,” says Coleen, who is a graduate of Medina High School and an advocate of all things local.

“We regularly donate to community organizations throughout the Medina area. The money we make stays in the community.”

Giving back to the community and offering genuine customer service are pillars of the salon, which just celebrated its 40th anniversary.

“We are committed to preserving the historic Medina neighborhood and supporting the entire community,” says Coleen. “We are excited to be part of the revitalization of the South Town, the area a couple blocks south of The Square.”
