Folks should find the right balance between modifying existing homes with modern features if the floor plan allows while still keeping the integrity and value of the house for future re-salability.

The current generation of baby boomers was raised by the “because I say so” generation, and when it comes to retirement living, much like they did growing up, baby boomers are seeking out options to do it their own way.

According to Denise Zervos, who, along with her husband, Mark, heads up The Neighborhood Experts at Platinum Real Estate, creative, open-minded thinking is the key to remaining in charge of your future.

Platinum Real Estate has just published a free checklist, “What to Consider when Right-Sizing Your Next Home,” to offer people a helpful guideline covering the seven factors to evaluate in your home’s ability to adapt on the road to retirement.

In this Mimi Magazine series, we explore each of the seven factors. This month, it’s maintenance and mobility.

“As we age, our tolerance for shoveling snow and cleaning gutters shifts,” she says.

“When this happens, it’s a good idea to sit down with us and brainstorm your options. Mobility and health issues pose the greatest barrier to those who want to stay in their current homes. Older homeowners may need to add amenities, such as walk-in showers, wider hallways and doorways, as well as first-floor bedrooms and laundry facilities.”

Folks should find the right balance between modifying existing homes with modern features if the floor plan allows while still keeping the integrity and value of the house for future re-salability, she says.

“I have a wealth of contacts and have seen some remodels that allow for long-term age in place homes,” says Denise. “If it makes sense, then make it work for your future longevity.

If this isn’t feasible cost-wise or if your home doesn’t modify well, we need to take a look at the next steps to achieving your housing goals.”

If you’re thinking of selling, now may be the time. Demand for your house will be strong during a period when there is little competition, ideally leading to a quick sale and a nice return on your investment.

Platinum Real Estate has seven offices in Northeast Ohio and five in Southern Florida. To receive the free checklist, “What to Consider When Right-Sizing Your Next Home,” call 216-990-2100 or 440-974-SALE, and visit YourNeighborhoodExpert.com for more information.
