Popular among celebrities for its anti-aging skin rejuvenation effects and athletes for its healing properties, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy has gone mainstream and is now available at Apex Dermatology in Westlake.

“PRP therapy has been used for years in clinical settings as a way to speed up the healing of sports injuries and for wound care,” says Dr. Aziza Wahby, a board-certified dermatologist at Apex Dermatology.

“More recently it has expanded to include aesthetic applications as well. Patients love it because they are using something natural—made inside their own body instead of in a laboratory—to rejuvenate skin and combat hair loss.”

The newest and largest of the seven Apex Dermatology offices in Northeast Ohio, the Westlake location is the first to add PRP treatments to its extensive aesthetic service menu. Dr. Wahby, along with Dr. Cynthia Lavery Henry, works in conjunction with medical aesthetician Anne Keller to deliver this new treatment.

“We are always looking for cutting-edge treatments to offer our patients,” says Dr. Wahby. “I take a patient-centric approach with all my clients and consult with them to determine the best treatment options for their individual needs. Now, if appropriate, I will be able to recommend PRP therapy as an option.”

PRP therapy consists of using a concentration of a patient’s own blood platelets to hydrate and smooth the skin, diminish fine lines and wrinkles, treat acne scarring and help regrow hair.

The process is simple: The doctor draws one to two tubes of the patient’s blood and spins it through a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets and remove them from the rest of the blood.

“We create this ‘liquid gold’ from your own body and then use it in the places you need it,” explains Dr. Wahby.

“I can inject it into the scalp for hair growth, I can inject it in different areas of the face for skin rejuvenation, or I can use it as part of a laser skin resurfacing treatment and microneedling to help increase collagen production.”

“One of the biggest advantages of using platelet-rich plasma is that it is so fresh. I inject it in your skin within 15 minutes of collecting it,” says Dr. Wahby, a doctor of osteopathic medicine who applies those philosophies to skincare.

The results will generally last one to two years, and it is recommended to have a treatment every six months to help maintain results.

“Apex is committed to using the latest technology to give our patients the best results,” says Ruth Barnum, Apex director of marketing. “Our goal is to make the most advanced skin treatments accessible to everyone across Northeast Ohio.”

“Oftentimes people assume that some of these aesthetic treatments are only available to celebrities in L.A. and New York, but you can have them right here in Northeast Ohio,” she adds. “Apex prides itself on innovation.”
