Every business has had to adapt to the current state of affairs, and attorneys are no exception.

“We’ve had to modify our in-person appointment model and now we’re doing telephone and videoconferencing appointments,” says Jay Nabors, a Cleveland-based attorney who focuses on estate planning. “I know some people might be confused about how to navigate a video appointment, but I can walk you through it.”

Jay reveals that more people than ever before have decided that now is the time to get their affairs in order, and that’s a good thing.

“While the prompt for taking action right now might seem like a distressing motivator, it’s an excellent idea to have your estate documents in place should you ever need them,” he says.

Jay can handle just about every part of creating your estate documents virtually, so you don’t have to visit his office or have him come to your home. “The only time we’ll have to be face-to-face is to have your will witnessed once it’s final,” he notes.

Jay says that while the courts are closed to large proceedings, they are open to attorney business and virtual hearings are being conducted.

“We can also e-file a lot more stuff than we were able to before,” he inserts. “No matter what your motivation for getting your affairs in order, now is a good time to get it done.”

Jay is a partner with Weston Hurd LLP. Typically he sees clients at the firm’s office in downtown Cleveland, in addition to meeting with clients in Strongsville upon request. But, for now, most meetings are happening virtually. Mention this story when you schedule an appointment for a Mimi reader exclusive. House calls and select evening appointments are available on a limited basis until the current health crisis passes.
