There’s more to a healthy smile than simply breaking out the toothbrush

Dr. Sanam Magrey, of Dental Care of Brunswick, has followed through on her vision to modernize her practice with new equipment, a revamped space and office operations.

Working with families, she looks at their complete picture of wellness, and tries to educate them about how their dental health is connected to their overall health.

“I want people to understand that there are many everyday seemingly harmless things that could be detrimental to your health,” she says. “For instance, I see more and more cavities and tooth deterioration in kids and teenagers who drink a lot of pop or energy drinks. These are loaded with sugar and acid and are terrible for your teeth. And all the caffeine is not good for you either.”

She suggests if you do drink an energy or sports drink, be sure to get in the habit of rinsing or brushing after.

Another lurking culprit is vaping. “At this point, we don’t even know the extent of the damage this can do to you,” she says. “Studies have linked it to oral cancers, even collapsed lungs and lung disease. As with any bad habit—and this one is horrible—you’re better off never starting.”

A positive dental habit that she says often goes overlooked is flossing. “People forget or think just brushing is enough, but it’s not. You need to get rid of the plaque between teeth and only flossing will do that. I recommend once each day, and with waxed, threaded floss.”

She also recommends that children gargle with a fluoride rinse after flossing, which can prevent tooth decay.

As a full-service practice, Dr. Magrey offers preventive dentistry, crowns and cosmetic dentistry, including veneers and teeth whitening.

“And for those who might not have been to a dentist in a long time, have no fear, we provide as pain-free an experience as possible,” she adds.
