A will right away?
By Patricia Nugent
Our current labor shortage and supply chain woes have us all waiting a little longer for just about everything. The legal system is no different.
“Even before the labor crunch, there has been a necessary amount of time people have to wait to have certain documents filed,” says local attorney Margaret T. Karl. “That’s just the nature of the system. There are no short-cuts around that. And I think to compound that, right now a lot of the government agencies are understaffed, which affects the length of time to turn around a legal document.”
As a lawyer who concentrates on elder law, Margie helps clients in estate planning, including wills, trusts, living wills and powers of attorney.
“My advice is to not procrastinate,” she says. “Every week I have people call me saying they need a will right away because maybe they are going on a trip, or a loved one is deathly ill and they need a power of attorney right away, or a spouse is going into assisted living and they need a Medicaid application right away. There’s nothing I can do. My hands are tied.”
Although patience is a virtue when it comes to documents, clients don’t have to worry about feeling rushed through their interactions with Margie. She’s earned a reputation for taking the time to explain documentation with clients so they know exactly what’s happening.
