Besides the four walls, one thing all homes have in common is a roof, and over the millennia we’ve tried just about every roofing material to help keep our heads dry—from thatch and animal dung to tin, copper, zinc and slate.

Slate, by the way, is a good choice because it’s a rock, pretty much the same technology you see in an episode of the Flintstones. Of course, slate is expensive, which is why you usually see it only on grand, stately homes in older affluent neighborhoods with Bentleys parked in the garage instead of Fred’s foot-powered, stone-wheeled jalopy.

The rest of us non-Bentley owners must be satisfied with good ol’ asphalt shingles, which can last 20-25 years if you are not pelted by golf ball-sized hail.

About Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles are similar to asphalt roads—a layer of a sticky, black, semi-solid form of petroleum imbedded with rocks. While our roads contain gravel, our shingles contain fine granules made of crushed rocks and minerals. These help protect your shingles from solar radiation and other environmental hazards.

One sign that your roof is aging is the presence of loose granules. You’ll see them in your gutters or on the ground where your downspouts empty. Another sign is reduced flexibility, which makes your shingles brittle and subject to cracking.

This sounds a lot like our own skin. When it ages, our skin becomes dull, dry, and flaky, and loses its suppleness. Of course, a good moisturizer can do wonders. Too bad there isn’t a moisturizer for our roof.

Oh, wait a minute.

Introducing Roof Renew
Pristine Clean—the fast-growing, Northeast Ohio-based company known for power washing siding, roofs and driveways—has introduced a new roof treatment called Roof Renew, which can extend the life of your roof 5-15 years.

“This is a soy-based, eco-friendly application that works by restoring lost oils to the shingles, and returning them near to their original flexibility and durability,” says company founder Ken Wilson. “The application waterproofs the surface of your roof and also reduces the effects of oxidation and bacteria growth.”

Although Ken closely studied the scrupulous lab tests showing that the Pristine Roof Renew application mitigates the aging process of shingles, he wouldn’t even consider offering the service to clients until he tried it on his own home.

“I was blown away,” he says. “My roof is 15 years old. The shingles were dull and brittle, and the granules were coming off. Now, a year later, the color is still rich, the shingles have fantastic elasticity, and the granules are adhering much better. The service saved me thousands of dollars over a roof replacement, and now we’re offering it to all of our clients whose roofs have seen better days.”

Pristine Clean’s Roof Renew service, Ken says, is also good for the environment. “With over 12 million tons of non-recyclable roof shingles filling our landfills each year, it’s an environmentally-friendly option. Not only will you save money, you’ll also help keep roof shingles out of our landfills.”

As a soy-based product, Roof Renew is safe for you family, pets, and landscaping materials.

Power Washing, Too
Of course, Pristine Clean also professionally power washes siding and roofs, and washes and seals concrete surfaces. And their gentle wash system means there is less chance of damage to your home.

“Our brand new, state-of the-art equipment means we rely on more water volume and less water pressure to get the job done right and safely,” Ken says. “Our focus is always on protecting your home and family as we clean.”

This year, Ken says he is seeing a lot more algae. “Grime and mildew are always present, but the wet spring and the constant afternoon thunderstorms have encouraged the growth of algae this year,” he says. “Whether it’s siding, shingles or concrete, we pretreat your surfaces with a mildewcide that kills algae, mildew and other contaminants and helps prevent them from coming back.”
