Adding a home improvement jewel like a deck or front porch creates a rich setting on which to enjoy the warm weather
By Laura Briedis
The barren landscape in the winter allows us to see our homes and surroundings in a different manner—almost like an empty canvas, where you can see through the trees and imagine a new deck wrapped around the back of the house. Or maybe you have something grander in mind, such as a sunroom or other home addition.
And just as the leaves are starting to fill in the trees, and shrubs and flowers are adding color and interest back to our yards, Kaye Construction is busy remodeling homes this spring and bringing these visions to life.
A family-owned business, this local company has been remodeling homes in Northeast Ohio for decades.
“Unlike bigger home improvement companies, where you never meet the owners, we oversee each job personally and work side by side with our tradesmen,” says Ron Kaye, who has been working in the home remodeling industry for more than a quarter century. He is passing along his know-how and work ethic to his sons, Joe and Josh, whom he jokingly says were born with a hammer in one hand and a screwdriver in the other.
“Our goal has always been to not just beautify homes, but to also make them more functional by changing the footprint and flow,” says Joe. “Function always comes first in all of our home remodels, then we add the esthetics and bling.”
One of the best ways to increase your home’s function is to add more square footage, whether by adding a sunroom, building a bump-out in your kitchen, designing a new master bedroom and bathroom, or even adding a second floor to a one-story home. And for homeowners who like to spend time in their backyards, a deck is an easy way to extend living space outdoors.
“We can build a deck in your backyard where you can grill out, or a front porch where you can enjoy a cup of coffee and watch the world go by,” says Josh.
Kaye Construction specializes in decks and takes pride in the quality of its workmanship and its creativity.
This fall, the company built a deck for Brook Park homeowners so they could sit outside and enjoy the amazing views of the Rocky River Valley below. The 12-by-30-foot upper-level deck features a partial sloped roof above and is outfitted with black powder-coated aluminum posts and rails.
“We designed a sloped roof off to the side of the house, so it didn’t need to be tied into the existing roof, and we built a storage room under the deck as well as a built-in firewood closet,” says Ron. “We also added platform stairs down the other side of the house to replace a ramp so the homeowners would not have to worry about walking on a steep, slippery incline.”
For homeowners who need more space year-round, a home addition is the best bet. Home additions come in all shapes and sizes. From adding a second-floor master bedroom and bathroom to building a sunroom on the back of your home, you will enjoy these newfound spaces for years to come. And for those who are looking to age in place, a first-floor renovation can allow homeowners to stay in the home they love.
“We are currently booking jobs on our summer schedule,” notes Joe. “It is our busy time for home additions as we start building in spring as soon as the weather warms up.”
