The average American will gain eight pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, according to the National Institutes of Health.

It’s harder to lose weight than it is to prevent gaining it. Here are some tips for pre-emptive damage control from Higher Heights trainers:

“Eat a healthy meal before attending a party. If you feel full, you’ll be less likely to overindulge.” — Kyle Hotz, Owner

“Try not to consume sugary drinks, alcohol and coffee drinks. An innocent-sounding holiday latte is loaded with sugar, calories and fat.” —Me

“Stress can lead to overeating and binge eating. Try to do something every day aimed at reducing stress, whether that’s strength training, cardio or yoga.” —Joe Bower

“Bring a water bottle with you wherever you go. Staying hydrated helps you feel full. Oftentimes when you get a grumbly stomach, it’s because you’re dehydrated, not hungry.” —Ashleigh Sullins

“Be mindful of balanced portion sizes. Stay accountable with a tracker.” —Amanda Bishop

“If you overindulge at a holiday meal, go on a 15-minute walk afterward. That will boost metabolism.” —Kevin Barnett

To set up you for success, we’ve recently restructured our Nutrition Program to build in more accountability and offer two packages, meeting with your nutrition counselor every week or every other week.
