Bunker Hill gives people the ultimate golfing experience
By Ken McEntee
Even the best golfer on the planet works to improve his game.
The same holds true for the best courses.
Bunker Hill Golf Course is a case in point, insists Chadley Gibson, general manager.
“After being voted best-of-the-best public golf course in Medina County for several years in a row, were still working hard to get better,” he says. “We give people the ultimate golfing—and fundraising—experience, and we’re taking every stride to perfection to celebrate our 100-year anniversary in 2027.”
This year, golfers have experienced Bunker Hill’s new 2-acre, 15-foot-deep lake at Holes 11, 12 and 13, and another new lake on Hole 6. The first lake has a practical purpose—helping to supply the primary watering lake that irrigates the course—but also adds breathtaking scenery, Chad explains.
“It’s a beautiful lake next to the par-3 tee box,” he says. “It just adds a lot of character through the three holes on the back nine with the sun glistening off of it. But, most importantly, the extra water ensures we can keep the course lush and green from edge to edge.”
The new lake on Hole 6 also has added character and toughened up the hole, which is a dogleg left par-4 where golfers typically try to go over trees, Chad says.
“A lot of times the ball gets tangled up in the trees or just barely makes it over,” he says. “There also was kind of a wet area due to heavy shade, and golfers spent a lot of time looking for balls there. The small lake just over the trees makes it more defined and very easy once you make the turn of the dogleg. Once you see the lake, if your ball is in the fairway, you're in good shape.”
Other new improvements at Bunker Hill include:
• New green construction on Hole 18 has been completed.
• Concrete paths throughout the course have been completed.
• A new pump house for an updated state-of-the-art irrigation system has been completed.
• New golf carts with upgraded seats, phone chargers, GPS units that provide exact yardage to the pin, tournament scoring and Bluetooth sound systems have been put into operation.
• New black tee boxes have been formed on holes 5 and 13 for tournament yardage.
• New tee boxes on Hole 2 have been formed for converting to a par-3 in 2024.
• A new green was formed for Hole 7 for converting into a par-5 with a peninsula green in 2024.
Indoors, Bunker Hill has completed a $250,000 upgrade of its existing six golf simulators to Tiger Woods Pro 2 with Ion 3 cameras.
“We already had phenomenal simulators, but we took them to the next level, Chad says. “In October, we’re going to hold simulator demonstration days featuring Len Houser, from 95.5 FM The Fish, Bruce Drennan, from WKNR AM 850 and the Fox 8 New Day Cleveland show.
The home of the Brunswick and Strongsville high school golf teams, Bunker Hill also hosts the Hurricane Junior Tour’s first major each year.
