Candyapple Nursery & Landscaping can create a splash in your backyard
By Patricia Nugent
Tops on the list of industries that experienced explosive growth in 2020—just behind manufacturers of PPE and hand sanitizer—the luxury in-ground pool business has skyrocketed. In the wake of the pandemic, people got in the habit of spending their entertainment dollars at home.
According to the management team at Candyapple Nursery & Landscaping, its pool supplier sold a record number of pools last year, three times what it usually does.
If you’re ready to take the plunge and start enjoying your own backyard vacation destination, the good news is that although you might have a longer wait than usual, for most types of pools, there’s a good chance if you call Candyapple soon, you could have your dream poolscape put in this year.
The management team explains that since a lot of the supplies, such as pool heaters and accessories, depend on parts that come from other countries, that’s where the delays are taking place. There’s also been a lag with approval of zoning permits from cities and municipalities to begin the construction.
But the folks at Candyapple say that with increased production, they’re able to keep up with the sharp demand better now than they could last year. Depending on the weather conditions, they are able to install pools 10 months out of the year.
To make things easier on customers, they’ve put together a model of “one-stop shopping” for yard transformation. Throughout the process from start to finish, customers will work with just one person who does everything from overseeing the pool installation to designing and installing surrounding stone decks and patios, outdoor kitchens, firepits and fireplaces, gazebos, pavilions, pergolas and outdoor lighting, as well as fencing to keep your paradise private.
What’s New in Pool Design?
Candyapple is the exclusive dealer in our area of Imagine Pools, the number one manufacturer of fiberglass pools in the world. They partnered with them because of their reputation as a premier maker of high-end, in-ground pools that are low-maintenance and feature ultra-durability and structural strength. They come with a lifetime warranty.
In addition to materials and craftsmanship, Imagine is also known for its innovative designs, coming out with new models in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors.
One of the most popular design elements this year is the ledge bench, which runs around the interior perimeter of the pool, about 12-16 inches submerged, so people can hang out and relax, without being completely in the water. (It’s like putting a lawn chair in your pool.) This is ideal for cooling off in the water and reading a book or enjoying a cocktail. For the younger set, fun pads and splash pads provide endless recreation.
Many of the styles also include the option to add jet systems to provide for avid swimmers who want to take their resistance training up a notch.
Breathtaking Backdrops
As a full-service landscaping design and build firm, the designers and planners at Candyapple work with homeowners to complement pools with everything from building flower beds to selecting plant materials and installing lawns. Staggering intermittent bloom cycles, they create yards that look gorgeous spring, summer and fall. For those who might not have a green thumb, they can stock them with low-maintenance materials.
Design is what really sets Candyapple apart from other landscape firms. They make each yard unique, with high-end plant materials and crafty placement.
This year, they’ve already brought in some exotic ornamental cherry trees and apple trees that can produce up to five different varieties of apples on one tree, plant materials with pom pom and spiral shapes, and unusual types of boxwood shrubs that will make your neighbors green with envy.
They even design landscapes that conjure natural living rooms with a wow factor, for instance creating a dining area under a canopy of trees.
Candyapple Nursery to Open Soon
As one of the largest nurseries in the area, the team at Candyapple has always prided itself on sourcing nursery stock that’s a little different than anywhere else in town. They offer extensive varieties of trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, mulch, stone and hanging baskets. The seasoned staff is preparing now for its season opening, on Thursday, April 15.
Don’t miss the hanging basket sale, which kicks off in May—just in time for Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 9.
It’s a point of pride that they partner exclusively with Ohio growers, so their high-end stock is properly acclimated to our climate and conditions, perfectly perched to thrive in Zone 5.
The nursery is open from spring buds through pumpkin season, closing on Sunday, October 31.
