With myriad styles, colors and levels of quality available, it may be intimidating to shop for the ideal cabinets for your new kitchen. Below, Steven Parker, vice president, kitchen and baths at Kiba Studios, in Medina, offers some helpful hints about where to begin.

Q: What variables should people consider when they shop for kitchen cabinets?
A: People should begin with a budget for how much they want to invest in cabinets. Prices are going to be determined by the quality of materials and construction as well as by the appearance and extra features that make daily life more convenient. People should consider appearance—what styles and colors they are attracted to—as well as functionality. You want your kitchen to be as easy and convenient to work in as possible.

Q: What materials are cabinets made from?
A: Lower priced cabinets are generally made out of furniture board, which is not as rugged and long lasting as plywood. If you don’t plan to remodel again for a long time, or if your doors and drawers are going to take a beating like in homes with children, you may want to consider upgrading to plywood.

Q: What options are available to enhance the use of kitchen cabinets?
A:
People usually want plenty of neatly organized space to store food, utensils and small appliances without clutter. Convenient options these days include slide-out shelves, Lazy Susans, dual drawers that separate your everyday cutlery from your good silverware, in-drawer knife blocks and trash can drawers. Many options are now available to eliminate wasted space in corner units.
