By mid-February, most of us are already looking at our New Year’s resolutions in the rearview mirror. And that’s just fine with the folks at My Personal Trainer studio in Westlake. Because unlike most places, they aren’t really interested in signing up clients in the short-term. Their success lies in establishing a relationship between client and trainer that produces lasting results in a setting that costs a fraction of what most personal trainers charge, with discounted monthly rates from $109-$159.

The Art of Losing Weight and Gaining Strength

My Personal Trainer has engineered a formula that produces results: two weekly trainer-supervised workouts utilizing state-of-the-art exercise machines.

“Our goal is for clients to build lean muscle mass, which boosts metabolism and improves overall health,” says Eric Schaefer, who is both a trainer and studio owner. “After the age of 30, people will lose approximately three to five percent of their muscle mass each decade. We strive to reverse that.”

Since working out for the past year at My Personal Trainer, Michael (right) now is free of the pain he had been suffering from a debilitating arthritis

Meet Michael, Patricia, Manny & Heidi

On any given day when you walk into My Personal Trainer, you’ll see people of differing ages, stages, capabilities and motivations.

Michael B. of Avon is an excellent example of a gentleman who is saying “no thank you” to aging.

At 65, he’s still working full time as a wealth manager. Although he looks like he’s in amazing shape, and you wouldn’t clock him a day over 50, when he first came to MPT, Michael was plagued with debilitating arthritis.

“I had pain in my hands, elbows and shoulders,” he recalls. “It was getting so bad I couldn’t even pick up my grandsons.”

He read about the studio in Mimi Magazine and decided to give it a try.

“Now, a year and a half later, I’m 100 percent pain free,” he says. “Although my goals were functionality and pain reduction, along the way I’ve lost eight pounds and added lean muscle. And I’m so much more flexible, feeling great in the morning when I wake up.”

Thanks to a nasty torn meniscus, Patricia L.’s right knee would lock up and cause her significant pain.

“I was hesitant to join a gym,” says the chipper 67-year-old retiree. “I didn’t think I would be engaged in the same old equipment.”

When she received a mailer from MPT in June, she thought she’d check it out.

“What I experienced was life-changing,” she says. “Since I’ve been coming here, I’ve had zero pain in my knee or other achy areas like shoulders and hips. I’m doing things I haven’t been able to do in years. At my age, many of my friends already seem like they need walkers. I don’t want that to happen to me.”

A nice bonus? Not only has Patricia toned her body, but she’s also lost 20 pounds and a size-and-a-half during the process.

“Dan and Griffin both have a great attitude,” she says. “My improvement is their number one goal and they are always challenging me to up the weights and reps.”

Manny and Heidi G. of Bay Village are a dynamic 50-something couple that appreciates the importance of squeezing training into their very busy lives. She owns a local dance studio and he is CEO of a specialty products company.

“Our workout schedule produces results in the least amount of time,” she says. “After our sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays, we go out to lunch and catch up with each other.”

They’ve been coming to My Personal Trainer for two years and say they enjoy the consistency of the sessions, individualized to their needs and goals.

“The trainers are personable and responsive,” says Manny. “I’ve never felt as if this is their program and they are trying to fit us into a box they’ve created. They genuinely care about our well-being.”

Meet the Trainers

The Westlake studio is blessed with a team of high-energy, results-driven trainers who also like to have fun: Dan Zimmerman and Griffin Kowalczyk.

With a decade of training experience under his belt, Dan chose this career after working in a physical therapy unit.

“I’ve always enjoyed fitness and developing lasting relationships with people,” says Dan.

His training philosophy is based on fostering communication with clients and offering compassion.

“I understand where clients are coming from can be hard, and I’m here to help them along on their journey,” says Dan.

For Griffin, who has been at the Westlake studio since 2018, personal training is a natural extension of his passion for fitness.

“I see training as a means of enhancing and extending your quality of life,” he says. “I’m a good fit with the philosophy here because it’s exactly the kind of place where I would feel most comfortable training. I like the one-on-one intensity more than crowds.”
