The list of ways exercise impacts seniors’ well-being is profound.

Studies have shown it prevents bone loss, heart disease, diabetes, obesity and hypertension, as well as boosts immunity, flexibility, balance, energy and self-confidence. It’s also been shown to reduce cognitive decline.

“Exercise is essential for a healthy, happy life,” says Karen Raisch-Siegel, executive director of LifeWorks of Southwest General. “As we get older, the health benefits of staying active—physically and socially—become even more evident. LifeWorks focuses on the wellness needs of seniors by providing these benefits.”

One senior member recently told Karen that joining LifeWorks has been the best decision she’s ever made for herself.

“I came to LifeWorks to be proactive with pain in both knees and legs,” she says. “I participate in warm-water exercise every morning. The pain in my knees and legs has diminished and I have lost 25 pounds.”

Karen says one of the things members love about LifeWorks is the ability to work at their own pace and abilities.

“All memberships include complimentary appointments with an exercise specialist for individual program design, health and fitness assessments and equipment set-up,” she says. “Our exercise specialists all have four-year degrees plus national certifications, which puts them in the best position to help our members get the most out of their workout.”

In celebration of Senior Health and Fitness month, through May 31, LifeWorks is offering discounted enrollment fee of $23 for Mimi readers age 60 and over. Monthly membership at LifeWorks includes unlimited participation in more than 85 weekly group classes—like Strength and Balance, Spinning, Slow Flow Yoga, Zumba and Muscle Conditioning—and the use of the facility’s exercise machines and amenities including the popular warm-water therapy pool.

Also happening in May will be free Friday guest visits for seniors and free Friday health talks. Guests can take Friday classes and enjoy all the LifeWorks amenities, following guest policies. (They need to provide a valid ID.) Health talks are scheduled for 2 p.m. on the following Fridays: Healthy Hips and Knees, May 6, Strength and Balance, May 13, and Exercising Smarter as you Age, May 20.
