Countertops may be the most noticeable part of your kitchen. Choosing the right countertops can make your kitchen look sensational, says Scott Powers, vice president of sales for Kiba Studios, in Medina. Here, Scott explains more about things you might consider as you shop for countertops.

Q: What’s the most important consideration when selecting countertops?
A: Choosing your material is usually the first choice you want to make. Most people choose a stone product—particularly granite or quartz.

Q: What’s the difference?
A: Granite is a natural stone, whereas quartz is an engineered product manufactured from natural quartz and resins. They are both rugged and beautiful—and the cost is comparable.

Q: How do you choose?
A: A lot of it comes down to design. Because granite is literally a rock, you get what Mother Nature has produced—and that can be spectacular. If you want a more consistent or specific design, you’re going to have more choices with quartz. Appearance is always a matter of personal preference, and you can always find stunning designs with both quartz and granite.

Q: Which is easier to maintain?
A: Granite should be sealed once a year to prevent staining. You don’t need to seal quartz, but it can be a little more susceptible to heat.
