How do you downsize?

When it comes to answering the “should I stay or move” question, it helps to simply sit down with pen and paper and do a needs assessment. In other words, have a heart-to-heart dialogue with yourself.

It was wonderful to lead several packed seminars last month about downsizing in our area. The lively groups of attendees had interesting questions and interests.

Top of mind for almost everyone was how to answer the question, “Where do I start?”

Finances should play a big role in this. It’s natural for people to fear outliving their savings, so planning ahead—and hiring an agent who is sensitive to red flags and pitfalls that could impact your financial picture—is important.

For instance, people might believe a certain condo is best for them, then they get hit with an unexpected assessment. People living on a fixed income need to craft a living where the expenses remain relatively stable.

It’s also integral to figure out the type of lifestyle that makes you the most comfortable and happy, a place where you will thrive. Some seniors enjoy the many activities and camaraderie in over-55 communities, while others do not.

As a certified agent in downsizing, I’m able to help people through every step of the difficult process so it won’t become overwhelming.
