As a newly minted 70-year-old, Janet L. Lowder leads an active life that includes working full-time downtown as an elder law attorney, running, boating and kayaking with her husband, exercising, hitting the yoga mat, and travelling to visit her adorable grandchildren in Seattle and New Jersey.

But her enviable lifestyle hasn’t been without a bump in the road, or, actually, water.

While boating in Canada with her husband a few years ago, she fell on the dock and into the water, dislocating her shoulder, tearing her rotator cuff and badly breaking her arm.

“My arm and shoulder were basically immobilized for six months,” she says. “Although I had been doing an exercise program before the accident, I never got back into it. I gained 20 pounds. I knew I needed to get back in shape.”

She checked out MaxStrength Fitness for professional help, but was skeptical at first, only signing up for the shortest package.

“I hemmed and hawed,” she recalls. “It didn’t make sense to me that only working out for 20 minutes, twice a week would produce results. But in the end, it did.”

She lost the 20 pounds and gained lean muscle. Another nice perk is she gained bone density.

“Every time I had my density tested after turning 60, it had dropped,” she says. “But the last time I had it taken, it had actually improved, which was a nice surprise at my age.”

In addition to more muscle mass to help her on long runs, she says her functionality, flexibility and balance have improved as well.

“I used to plop down after doing a plank in yoga, now I can very slowly move to the mat,” she says.

A Very Different Experience
Janet says she had worked out with personal trainers in the past, and the experience was very different than MaxStrength.

“Cassie, my trainer, is an inspiration to me,” she says. “She took special care when I started training here to address my shoulder injury. Now my strength and range of motion are much improved. Her attention to perfect form, and pushing me harder than I ever would myself, have really made the difference.”

And that’s a good thing, as Janet shows no signs of slowing down.
