Ninety percent of Americans reported in 2021 that their outdoor living was “more important than ever before,” according to a report by Outdoor Trend.

Here in Northeast Ohio, with homeowners showing their outdoor spaces more love—and expecting more from them—professional landscaping companies are rising to the challenge.

We caught up with Jason Sulzener, owner of Precision Outdoor Creations, to get an idea of how his clients are putting their stamp on the great outdoors.

“Patios and pavilions have become a specialty of ours,” says Jason, who has been in landscape construction the past 20-plus years, founding POC in 2014. “Homeowners want to expand the functionality of their space, whether that means a quiet sanctuary for cozy family dinners or entertaining with big parties.”

Perfecting the Outdoor Family Room
“Because our high-end clients appreciate the finished effect of using top-grade materials coupled with superior craftsmanship, we partner with an Amish construction firm out of Berlin, Ohio,” he says.

Most pavilions are about the size of your traditional family room, at 14-feet square, or 10x14. And the opportunities to customize them are endless.

“These pavilions are architectural splendors that can complement any home, from classic and elegant Victorian styles to rustic and minimalist modern,” he adds. “The materials—cedar wood and copper roofs—ensure the finished look is absolutely gorgeous. People can opt for open or closed rafters and enclose all or part of the structure. The sky’s the limit.”

Underfoot they work with natural flagstone, Unilock and Techo-bloc pavers to create eye-catching statement slabs and walkways.

“These stones and pavers are beautiful and luxurious, as well as extremely durable,” he says. “We stand behind their extended warranty.”

Let There Be Light (and Warmth)
“It seems like every job we are doing includes more intricate lighting,” reports Jason. “Everyone wants to get more use of the space. With low-maintenance LED lighting, we can achieve different effects, from overhead to task lighting and lamp lighting to illuminated walkways.”

Homeowners are also pushing the limits by extending the season with radiant heating.

“We install infrared radiant heating solutions that can practically offer people year-round enjoyment,” he says. “This technology heats objects instead of heating the air, so it provides a comfortable environment for people to hang out, whether grilling dinner or having people over.”

“Outdoor kitchens have also really taken off over the past few years,” he says. “We used to just enclose the grill with a countertop. Now people are asking for us to build tabletops and add cooking elements beyond the grill, like a fireplace-pizza oven combo, sinks, refrigerators and bars.”

The spaces are often finished with fire and water features, from firepits to low-maintenance ponds and bubbling rock sculptures.

Keeping the Upkeep to a Minimum
“People are busier than ever it seems, and our clients are not looking for more things to do around the house,” he says. “We’ve got low-maintenance landscaping down to a science, putting together the most attractive stock that you don’t have to worry about, with timed bloom cycles to delight the eye from spring through fall.”

Jason says his family-operated firm has earned a reputation for bringing creativity and passion to every job. He and his crews take continuing educational seminars to keep their perspectives fresh.

“People appreciate our VIP treatment and accessibility,” he adds. “They work with me directly from the consultation to installation and when the job is done.”
