How did you sleep last night?

I often ask this if I see a client struggling. Getting positive sleep habits and patterns in place can skyrocket your health and wellness.

Sleep impacts almost every function in the body, down to the cellular level. It influences everything from your fitness level to body composition, hormones, stress levels, appetite, mood, ability to concentrate, immune system and even aging.

Researchers have even found that while you’re sleeping, your brain “cleanses” itself. Cerebral fluid washes in and out of our brain, helping get rid of metabolic waste that accumulates during the day.

On the flip side, lack of sleep is associated with dementia and Alzheimer’s, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and higher risk for obesity.

If you’re not getting your recommended seven to nine hours of sleep per night, here are a few tips:

  • Get sunlight during the day, and avoid blue light from phones, televisions and computers at night.
  • After your morning cup of coffee, avoid caffeine since it can stay in your system for six to eight hours.
  • Wake up and go to bed the same times every day/night.

Achieving optimum sleep is just one of the lifestyle factors we address through our new wellness coaching. Sessions also cover things like nutrition and stress management.

Based on clinical research, the MaxStrength training protocol I established 15 years ago—two 20-minute, trainer-led, no-sweat workouts on specialized equipment—has attracted legions of results-driven clients.

Introducing wellness coaching is a natural extension of our work here. This is our passion and our drive. Trained coaches offer people a level of support to break the habits that might be holding them back in life.
