MDG Flooring America isn’t just a family-owned business; it’s a premium, customer-service enclave where expertise and service thrive

Home builders want to work with reliable vendors who do the job right, says Scott Powers, a former contractor.
“It’s pretty simple,” Scott explains. “You want things done right, at a reasonable price, and you don’t want to have service calls. So, the quality of installation is probably the most important thing you’re looking for as a builder.”
That, he says, is why he chose MDG Flooring America, in Medina, to install flooring in the homes he built. In fact, Scott was so impressed with MDG that he recently became its sales manager.
“Quality of installation is probably still the biggest advantage we offer over most of our competition,” Scott insists.
But that isn’t the only advantage, he emphasizes. MDG’s large selection of carpet, luxury vinyl tile (LVT) and other flooring materials is another.
“Our showroom displays a lot of samples covering a gamut of prices that work within everybody’s budget,” he says. “We do tend to stay away from the cheapy-cheap stuff because we don’t want to sell products that are going to fail. But we do carry lower budget flooring for rental properties, for example, and we also have you covered with premium flooring for luxury homes.”
Rugged, waterproof and easy to maintain LVT, Scott reports, continues to dominate the flooring market. But carpeting also is in strong demand.
“Some people believe that nobody wants carpet anymore,” he says. “That’s far from true. There are a lot of people who still like the softness of carpet, and carpet has come a long way from what it used to be. A lot of the old polyesters used to fuzz, but today’s carpeting is made with better quality than ever, and it provides a genuine warmth and softness.”
Scott believes his past experience as a high volume MDG Flooring customer provides him with a unique perspective as the company’s new sales manager.
“I think it’s valuable to understand the buyer’s side,” he shares. “I have a good handle on what customers are looking for and what their concerns are.”
After joining MDG Flooring in March, Scott was named sales manager, succeeding Christie Jackson, who took on her new role as operations manager. MDG is a family-owned business that is a member of the national Flooring America cooperative. Being a cooperative member allows MDG to take advantage of the same purchasing economies of scale as the corporate home improvement stores—and pass the competitive pricing forward to its customers, Scott says.
“We compete on price, but we excel in customer service,” he says. “We are growing, but we’re still a relatively small store where you can really get personal attention and the feel of family when you walk to the showroom.”
MDG also takes pride in helping the local Medina community, Scott says.
“We always have some kind of donations going, whether we’re doing a coat drive, collecting food or doing a toy drive, and we offer discounts for people who make donations to our charity collections,” he says. “We don’t want to just be a seller to the community—we want to be a part of it.”
The MDG showroom is now being redesigned and will soon include Flooring America’s KIBA Studios, which will offer kitchen cabinets, countertops, plumbing fixtures, tubs and showers and other products, Scott announced.
