Meet the Artist: Dr. Parminder Singh
By Kelli Comer
If you have a passion for something, you can always find time to make it a priority in your life. These words aptly describe Parminder Singh, MD, a local physician who beautifully balances the scientific and artistic aspects of his personality. Dr. Singh lives and works in two distinctive worlds—the world of medicine and the world in which his artistic gifts run free. Along with being a board-certified physician in internal medicine, Dr. Singh specializes in landscape, water drop, commercial and industrial photography.
By day, Dr. Singh owns his private practice in Conneaut, beginning his workdays around 7:30 a.m. and continuing until around 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, in addition to working a half-day on Saturdays.
“I try to take full advantage of the moments that I can focus on my photography,” Dr. Singh says. “Balance is the key—handling my medical practice, while also concentrating on my interest in photography.”
Dr. Singh keeps a close eye on other professionals and finds himself asking, “how do they do that?” A completely self-taught photographer, Dr. Singh has dabbled in YouTube and other online programs to supplement his intrinsic talent.
With a passion for color, beauty and ingenuity, Dr. Singh’s striking photography pays homage to Americana, expressing the vibrant spirit of this rich culture. Picturesque landscapes, architectural wonders and small-town heritage are brought together in stunning beauty and published in his keepsake photographic books celebrating the beauty of the Northeast Ohio region. Equally impressive is his growing collection of water drop photography, with its unique shapes and color patterns, reflections and refractions.
Dr. Singh’s passion for photography piqued about 25 years ago with the purchase of a Nikon F3 to shoot film. Inspired by one of his patients with a background in aerial photography, Dr. Singh became interested in the Mamiya medium format. He eventually became interested in large format photography. Dr. Singh shoots 4x5 on film and uses a Phase One XF 150 digital camera today.
In addition to his medical practice and photography, Dr. Singh is passionate about music. “Two of my music videos have been shown extensively on Indian television,” Dr. Singh smiles. “I have learned a variety of music recording techniques, set up a recording studio at home and assembled all the pertinent technology and equipment. I love to sing.”
Dr. Singh emphasizes the importance of making the most of your 24 hours per day.
“I see myself as a student, learning all the time. That’s pretty much my philosophy,” Dr. Singh explains. “Experiment as well. It doesn’t matter if you always get good results. Don’t forget that photography is just a practice. Even if the scene seems cluttered or messy, search out and focus on beautiful patterns.”
