The world could use a lot more of avoiding conflict and resolving differences in a peaceful way. That’s the goal of the Japanese martial art of aikido, which, unlike other practices, is non-violent, non-combative and non-competitive.

As one of the oldest operating martial arts schools in Lake County, dating back 50 years, North Coast Aikikai opened its newest dojo in Willoughby last year.

“We have students who are children of our past students, which is really rewarding,” says owner and sensei Salvatore LaCorte. “Aikido does not rely on physical strength, but rather focuses on blending with an opponent and using their own force against them. You won’t see people breaking boards or shattering glass here. Techniques neutralize an attacker by throwing them off balance and redirecting the momentum. It’s excellent for building coordination and confidence.”

He explains that for the instructors and students, it’s a benefit to be an official United States Aikido Federation school.

“On a global level, throughout the year we bring in high-ranking master instructors to put on seminars and expose our students to the best of the organization in terms of the traditional practice of aikido,” he says. “We also travel to educational and training opportunities with the group. Our variety of programs and levels of study suit students ages 7 to adults and seniors.”

He says they go through a three-step process for those who are curious about aikido. First someone comes in and observes a class. Then if they are interested, they are invited to take a free class. And if it feels like a good fit for them, they join the dojo.

In January, Sal reports they will be offering their yearly promotions and decorating the dojo as part of the purifying ceremony of Kagami Biraki, or celebration of the New Year in Japanese culture. Look for upcoming details on their Facebook page.
