Orthotics can help
By Gladys de Leon, DPM Foot & Ankle Specialists of Ohio
Orthotics shoe inserts are an effective way to improve the biomechanics of the foot to address many issues in different populations of patients.
For toddlers and children suffering born with congenital deformities such as club foot, the orthotics can help maintain surgical correction.
With student athletes, the right orthotic can treat common injuries such as Achilles’ tendonitis, prevent overuse conditions, and improve sports performance by allowing joints and muscles to operate at their peak level. Inserts are particularly helpful in preventing stress fractures.
In the general population, orthotics can be particularly effective with a common ailment known as plantar fasciitis, which is inflammation of the fascia that causes heel pain.
Diabetics with neuropathy or poor sensation may suffer from pressure ulcers or lesions. Orthotics help to offload the pressure sites to allow healing and prevent future ulcers.
Before we take a cast of the foot, whether a custom mold of foam, plaster, or digitally, we perform a gait analysis and musculoskeletal exam. The molds are then sent to a lab to create the custom fabricated insert.
There are over-the-counter inserts available, but there’s a world of difference between a one-size-fits-all product and one that’s specified to your foot.
In our office, we also offer supplements and CBD produces to provide alternative treatment options for injuries and pain. Our patients, including myself and family members have found relief of pain using oral tinctures (drops under the tongue) and topical salves, roll-on and patches.
