We all have a physiological fight-or-flight response to stressful situations, which causes our heart rate to speed up, digestion to slow, and adrenaline to flow freely. This is our natural way to deal with stressors. But for some people, it is constantly in overdrive, causing them to respond inappropriately to even minor triggers, which leads to a hyperarousal state that can cause all types of ailments from anxiety and depression to post-traumatic stress disorder and insomnia.

Reset Medical & Wellness Center is helping these patients hit the reset button and get their sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems back in sync.

As staff physician Michael Louwers, MD, explains, our nervous system is comprised of two branches. The sympathetic activates the fight-or-flight response while the parasympathetic restores the mind-body physiology to a state of rest and digest. Normally these two work in balance with each other, but when they are out of sync problems arise.

“Our Neuro Sympathetic Reset is a 20-minute outpatient procedure that effectively resets the sympathetic nervous system to its unstuck, pre-stress or pre-trauma state,” says Kelly Price, chief executive officer, who founded the company along with Joshua Goldner, MD. “In layman’s terms, it is like resetting your computer or phone when it is not working by turning it off and then back on.”

FDA-approved for pain relief, this procedure is now being used off-label for treating PTSD, anxiety, depression, insomnia, hormonal imbalance, sexual dysfunction, impulsivity and other conditions.

“The anesthetic block we use temporarily halts this part of the overactive nervous system, and though the anesthetic is temporary, the benefits are long lasting,” says Dr. Louwers, who has worked in interventional pain management for the past 16 years. “In essence, the block helps create new pathways in the brain that allow us to process emotions and respond to stress in a healthy way.”

“The results are instantaneous as patients often feel better before getting off the table, and the improvements can last for months or even years,” he says. “We have seen clinically significant improvements in more than 80% of our patients.”

While this Neuro Sympathetic Reset treatment may be new, it is based on a 100-year-old treatment called the Stellate Ganglion Block, which was originally used to relieve physical pain in the head, neck, chest or arm.

“We always recommend that patients not use this as a stand-alone treatment, but couple it with other traditional treatments, such as mindfulness practices and talk therapy, for best results,” Dr. Louwers says.

Only one of a few wellness centers offering this novel treatment, Reset Medical & Wellness Center has been attracting patients from all over the world, as far away as South Africa to all over the United States, since opening this spring in Strongsville.

“Though insurance does not cover this treatment, we try to make it affordable to all since it is a wonderful adjunct to conventional methods,” says Kelly, who has worked for various charitable organizations helping those with mental health issues. “We partner with the non-profit Erase PTSD Now that awards grants to patients for treatments, and we also give 20% off to military members, first responders, nurses, educators and their families.”

In addition to this innovative Neuro Sympathetic Reset treatment, the center also offers Trigger Point Therapy for myofascial pain, Ketamine IV Therapy for treatment-resistant depression, and IV Nutritional Therapy to enhance overall wellness.

“We take a comprehensive approach to mental health because we believe it needs to be prioritized as much as physical health,” Kelly says. “It is our mission to provide hope and healing to as many people as possible.”
