Rosé and Roses: a Mother’s Day Tasting
By Susan De Carlo, Regency Wine Sellers
On Thursday, May 5, Regency is hosting a special wine event we’re calling Rosé and Roses: A Mother’s Day Tasting. It’s a great way to celebrate mom a couple of days early and get a jump start on her special weekend.
Now before you say, “Rosé, no way,” understand that rosés are not what they used to be. Or, rather, they are what they used to be.
From what we can gather, the ancient Romans were drinking wines akin to rosé more than 2,000 years ago, and Provence—the oldest wine-making region in France—has been making rosé since the 6th century, and all it took was the 1970s to damage its reputation. That’s when some well-meaning winemakers inadvertently made the wine sweet and a large segment of the market loved it. Then the marketers got involved, giving rise to “white zinfandel” and “blush wines.”
But rosés were never meant to be sweet, and they’re not, especially if you’re drinking one from Europe.
One of my favorites is the French Minuty rosé. It’s dry with subdued fruits and priced at $31.99. The “M” version is slightly more fruity and sells for $21.99.
I also enjoy Mont Gravet, which is shockingly priced at just $8.99. When a wine that good is priced that low you don’t ask questions. You just stock up. A box—which is equivalent to four bottles—is just $21.99.
The Rosé and Roses event runs from 6-8 p.m. and is a guided tasting, which means all guests will be served the same wine at the same time, while representatives Kelly Clemente and Maryann Bertele discuss the characteristics of each. And every guest—not just mom—takes home a potted miniature rose. Reservations are required and attendance is limited, so please call the shop to reserve your spot.
Regency Wine Sellers & Wine Bar is located at 115 Ghent Road (Merchants Square) in Fairlawn. The Rosé and Roses tasting is $35 per person and also includes a sample of Susan’s legendary homemade cheesecake. For reservations, call 330-836-3447 or for more information, visit RegencyWineSellers.com.
