See how Curb Appeal Painting can transform a century home into a chic, ultra-modern esthetic home
By Patricia Nugent
When it comes to transforming a century home into a chic, ultra-modern esthetic, the seasoned team at Curb Appeal Painting is up to the task.
The home shown accompanying this story has been in the husband’s family for generations, and they kept adding onto it and renovating, most recently 10 years ago.
The cabinetry in the wide-open, 370-square-foot space already had great bones, so the homeowners decided to repaint rather than gut everything. They chose new fronts that are more modern and reflective of their style.
“Our designer highly recommended Curb Appeal, so we gave them a call,” says Anna Kanaris. “We were on a tight timeline to get into the home, and they graciously squeezed us into their busy schedule.”
To match the black-and-white motif going on throughout the rest of the stunning home, Anna chose custom shades of antique white on one side of the kitchen and deep, satiny black on the other. She’s melding it all together with dramatic black granite counters and a white subway tile backsplash with a subtle texture and iridescence. Contemporary gold hardware will add a parting shot of pizazz.
All in the Prep Work
Surprisingly, it takes longer to prep the cabinets than it does to paint them. This job will take about four days, with three Curb Appeal team members involved with prep work.
“To make things easier on the homeowner, we always create a plastic shield protecting cabinetry interiors, so they don’t have to remove all the contents,” says Field Supervisor Eugene Shpilman, noting that kitchen cabinet painting is their specialty. “We mask tape down paper to cover counters and floors and all exposed areas. Then we disassemble doors, drawers and hardware.”
When it comes time to paint, they create plastic sheeting “dust walls” to prevent overspray from going into any other areas.
“When we start the job, we first clean the cabinets, then sand, apply a coat of primer, and then sand again and paint, also sanding between coats of paint,” says Eugene.
The Professional Product Difference
Curb Appeal uses professional-grade paint that contains a hardener within the formula.
“It will withstand all the wear and tear you’d expect with kitchen cabinetry,” says Eugene. “This is as close to a factory finish as you can achieve with paint. This is a world above what you’d find at the big box stores.”
In the end, Anna was so pleased with the job the painters did, she decided to hire them to also paint the vanities in her bathrooms.
“Sure, we could have replaced them instead of repainting, but why remove good cabinets, and all the tile around it, if you don’t need to?” she asks.
“Just as they were highly recommended to me, I’ll be sure to start passing their name along to others,” she adds. “They’ve been extremely professional, precise, knowledgeable, friendly, courteous and clean. The work has been seamless. Our experience from start to finish has been fantastic.”
In addition to kitchen cabinets, Curb Appeal’s marketing director Rob Drago reports they paint cabinets in any room of a home, as well as bookshelves, vanities, doors and trim.
“Since we have carpenters on staff, when people need to fix or refinish something like crown molding during a job, we can accommodate that,” he says.
With the holidays right around the corner, Rob recommends getting on their schedule soon so your home will be exactly how you hope it could look before all the parties.
