After a sleepless night of tossing and turning, we often spend the next day feeling moody or lacking focus. And prolonged sleep deprivation can cause even more severe consequences.

Science has found that consistently poor-quality sleep puts us at risk for serious health conditions, such as obesity and heart disease, and can also lower our life expectancy. These short- and long-term effects show us the importance of making a good night’s sleep a priority.

There are many reasons why someone might not sleep restfully, and acupuncture can address several of the most common ones.

In a World Health Organization report in 2003, acupuncture is listed as a treatment proven effective to treat pain, stress and anxiety, by activating the body’s natural painkillers, decreasing cortisol levels and increasing dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain.

Many of our clients say that after an acupuncture treatment, they feel a sense of calm that helps them sleep better for several days.

We hope that people give acupuncture a try before taking sleeping medications, like benzodiazepines, which often lead to misuse, abuse and addiction—even when taken as prescribed. Acupuncture poses much less risk to a patient than drug therapy.

In addition to promoting beneficial sleep, this safe and non-invasive treatment also helps with pain and muscle tension, headaches and migraines, stress, anxiety and autoimmune disorders. Feel free to give us a call if you have any questions.
