Stone's Construction and Remodeling
By Patricia Nugent
If you judge a company by the awards it has racked up, then Stone’s Construction and Remodeling would be a top contender in Northeast Ohio.
For the past 40 years, this family-owned and operated company has garnered accolades within the industry as well as countless happy clients.
Owner Chad Stone reports they are six-time Angie’s List Super Service Award winners, Better Business Bureau members, and have recently won an award for the Largest Footprint in Social Media. They are also partnered with and sponsored by Channel 5 television and 95.5 The Fish radio stations.
“I attribute a lot of our success to continuing to do things the way my dad, John, did when he founded the company back in 1981,” he says. “He was unfailingly honest and transparent.”
At 84, John is still active with the company, pulling permits and doing construction drawings.
“Our sweet spot is high-end home additions, custom kitchen renovations and basement remodeling,” says Chad. “Over the past year, I’d say that mother-in-law suites have become our number one most requested job. We design plenty of space for the person to live independently, with their own kitchen, etc. And probably the number two job for us is kicking out the back of a home to create an expansive new kitchen.”
No job is too big or too small, he says, and his crews do everything, including all the exterior work for a home addition.
With home values being strong in this area, he notes that people don’t mind investing in the home they’re in, rather than buying a new one.
“For more living space, and even to add bedrooms or a home office, many of our customers are having us remodel their basements,” he says. “And they are willing to pay for high-end materials and workmanship. We just finished a $200,000 basement renovation in Hudson.”
Knowing What to Expect
Clear-cut communication is the cement of their relationships.
“On every job, we offer the client a weekly itinerary of exactly what they can expect,” he says. “People have horror stories of contractors who show up one day then don’t come back for weeks. That’s not how we operate. I appoint a job site manager at each and every job, then check in at every job, nearly every day, to make sure the job is moving forward and the customer is satisfied. Most of our jobs get finished earlier than expected. Customer service is our number one priority.”
Part of going the extra mile means they pass their wholesale discount along to clients by sending them directly to their vendors to make selections.
“We work with about 40 companies that supply a wide range of materials for people to choose from flooring to cabinetry and countertops,” he says. “Clients benefit from both the manufacturer warranty as well as our lifetime warranty on labor that’s transferrable for up to one new homeowner. With being stuck at home the past couple years, it seems like people have pent-up frustrations. That’s why we do our best to take any worry or risk away from the prospect of home renovation.”
Chad is up front in saying that his company will probably not be the cheapest one if homeowners are price shopping for contractors.
“We refuse to cut corners on materials or workmanship like some others do,” he says. “When you think about it, you’re investing in the place where you’ll hopefully live for many years to come. Would you look for the cheapest surgeon if you had to have brain surgery? No.”
What Clients are Saying
For Vicki Lynn W., a huge basement transformed into expansive living space. “They finished my large basement and it’s beautiful. Professional from quote on paper to excellent work, friendly, skilled staff. They worked with me on every detail and I couldn’t be happier with the final look.”
And Amy S. had this to say, “Chad Stone was extremely professional and gave us a great deal on our basement finishing job. In fact, I could live down there. We are very pleased. Beautiful. The young men working for Stone’s could not have been more polite and hardworking. They became like family. It’s hard to have people in your home for eight weeks (holidays in-between), but I enjoyed them and their energy. They did quality work and we had easy access to Chad.”
The bottom line, Chad says, is that they appreciate the fact that a home addition or renovation is often the second-most expensive investment a family will make in their lifetime.
“We take pride in the fact that in all these years, we haven’t had any negative feedback,” he says. “We take great care of our employees, so they’ll likewise take great care of the homeowner.”
