“Our goal is to encourage folks to appreciate the magical natural world going on outside,” says Assistant Chief of Outdoor Education Becky Parkin. (Her personal favorite spot? Lakeshore Reservation, which provides stunning panoramic views of the ice dunes.

Those who prefer night hikes flock to the illuminated 1-mile Arbor Lane Loop trail at Chapin Forest Reservation, presented by Sylvan Learning of Mentor. The lights are on between dusk and 11 p.m.

According to Becky, the weather forecast this year is tricky. “We are in an el niño, which signifies drier-than-normal conditions,” she explains. “However, what is unique to Northeast Ohio is that we sit next to Lake Erie. When the snow arrives, you can hit the trails on cross-country skis or snowshoes, both available for rent at Pine Lodge Ski Center at Chapin Forest Reservation. Snowshoes are also available to rent at Penitentiary Glen Nature Center. And kids of all ages love hopping on their sleds at four hillside destinations in Lake Metroparks.

Also don’t miss the Farmpark Ice Festival on Friday and Saturday, January 26 and 27. Enjoy ice-carving demonstrations by well-known carvers from around the country, the lighting of the fire & ice tower, and a bevy of winter-themed, family-friendly activities. S’mores and hot cocoa bar, anyone?
