The accidental farmer nourishes Cleveland

Life has a unique way of leading one down the right path. Take Trevor Clatterbuck, founder of Fresh Fork Market.
In his senior year at Case Western Reserve University, he decided to skip law school and pursue a career intending to be the Amazon marketplace of local foods, servicing restaurants from local farms.
By 2015, Trevor moved to a farm in Holmes County, Ohio’s Amish Country.
“The year 2015 was a turning point for me,” he says. “I went from being a broker of food to being a farmer. It wasn’t easy and it wasn’t profitable at first, but I learned a lot. It made me better at my job. I understand farmers. I know what questions to ask and I can work out a plan that benefits them and the consumer alike.”
Today, he manages his operations from a pastoral century barn, working directly on his land but also with nearly 75 area farmers. “Each week, I work with our community to put together a grab bag that not only reflects what is in season, but also ingredients that work well together,” he says.
Subscribers pick up their weekly package from the back of a refrigerated box truck. The produce featured in each week’s share has usually been harvested within the last 24 to 48 hours. Produce changes with the seasons, and, as Trevor likes to say, “the season starts out green, gets colorful and ends heavy.” Each week’s share contents are announced via a newsletter and accompanied with recipes and information about the farms.
