All of us are caregivers. Whether we’re caring for elderly parents, a spouse, children, or friends and neighbors, at some point we find ourselves in that role. And just like that airplane oxygen mask analogy, perhaps there is no one more important to care for than ourselves.

Karen Hadden, owner of The Helicopter Daughter, has found herself in just about all those caregiving roles at some point in her life. That’s why she decided that no matter where you are in that scenario, the caregiver or the cared for, everyone can use a little help.

“I opened The Helicopter Daughter after managing the physical, emotional and practical needs of both of my parents,” Karen says. “I was happy to do it, but it was overwhelming at times. It was difficult to find ways to help them naturally balance the harsh side effects of their medications while also reducing my own stress. I wanted to do that for people searching for the same solutions.”

Karen began by offering products and books to help ease the physical and emotional side effects of illness for both patients and their caregivers. Still dedicated to that original mission, The Helicopter Daughter has evolved over the last year to include even more products, such as special gifts for all ages that offer support, comfort or just a good laugh.

The Helicopter Daughter is a haven of appreciation for caregivers and you’ll find a delightful assortment of fun and whimsical gifts to give.

“I’ve come to realize after my caregiving journey and talking with customers that support doesn’t always have to come in the form of a self-help book or cozy blanket, although we have those, too,” Karen says. “Sometimes a good belly laugh from a greeting card or an irreverent T-shirt or mug really is the best medicine.”

The Helicopter Daughter includes items from popular lines like Happy Everything, Rifle Paper Co., Ann Cate bags and, exclusive to this area, spartina 449.

Part of Karen’s new additions at The Helicopter Daughter is The Heart Space, an adjoining room to the shop where Karen holds special events that foster community and creativity.

“The Heart Space is a place where people can gather and get creative while sharing stories and, of course, laughter,” Karen says. “Working creatively with our hands is a real stress reliever and a lot of fun.

Thoughtfully furnished with vintage pieces, The Heart Space holds fond memories for Karen that she enjoys sharing with others.

“The space is warm and inviting,” Karen says. “We also offer supportive sessions, like a grief series where we bring in experts. It’s just a great space where we can offer support, connection and creative opportunities.”

Visit The Helicopter Daughter for holiday stocking stuffers and hostess gifts, charcuterie boards, entertaining essentials, books and journals, and unique items for the kids and grandchildren. Gift wrap is included.

“We’d love to meet you,” Karen says. “People are always surprised by the broad range of gifts we have available for any occasion. It’s truly a place for self-care, comfort and recovery—whatever that might mean in your life. We have something for everyone, and please don’t forget about yourself.”
