The memory mushroom

An area of great interest and research is nootropics–substances that may improve cognitive function, including memory. I’d like to discuss one of these substances, a medicinal mushroom that according to studies contains bioactive substances that may protect against Alzheimer’s disease, help relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety, and even speed recovery from nervous system injuries.
Lion’s mane mushroom, named for its shaggy appearance, contains two special compounds called hericenones and erinacines known to stimulate the production of nerve growth factor (NGF) in the body. NGF is a protein that plays a crucial role in the growth, maintenance, and survival of nerve cells, making it important for brain and nerve health.
Lion’s mane mushroom has been shown to reduce symptoms of memory loss in mice, as well as prevent neuronal damage caused by amyloid-beta plaques, which accumulate in the brain during Alzheimer’s disease. While there have been no direct studies to date on people with Alzheimer’s, a 2009 study in older adults with mild cognitive impairment found consuming three grams of powdered lion’s mane mushroom daily for four months significantly improved mental functioning. The researchers noted the benefits disappeared roughly four weeks after supplementation ended.
When choosing a lion’s mane supplement, two brands I really like are Host Defense and our own Vital Choice brand. In addition to organic lion’s mane, we also offer a product called Brain Mushroom Support. This formula combines lion’s mane with studied nootropics including ginkgo biloba, bacopa, and rhodiola. Together, these provide a robust cognitive support formula. To learn more, please stop in and see us.
