Train yourself to be mindful

Journaling identifies what is causing our emotions and leads to positive actions that build healthy habits.

Last month we began our discussion about The Unstuck Formula, my proven method for helping women in their 50s transform negative thoughts into positive actions through managing Thoughts, Emotions, Actions and Words (the TEA+W method). We started with thoughts, and how the power of thought influences the next step—emotions.

Emotions play a critical role in personal growth and positively or negatively influence our ability to overcome obstacles or navigate change. The Unstuck Formula teaches you to recognize the triggers that cause negative feelings and emotions and shift them to positive ones. If we experience a positive emotion, we are compelled to act positively.

The Unstuck Formula teaches journaling to train ourselves to be mindful, self-reflective and self-aware. Nothing helps to work through feelings and emotions like writing them down.

Journaling takes practice and dedication. The key to The Unstuck Formula is leaning into our emotions and allowing ourselves to feel them without judgment. Journaling leads to understanding and results in positive action.

Here are a few things to consider when starting a journaling habit:

  1. Become aware of your feelings and label them.
  2. Recognize what made you feel this way. What was the trigger for the emotion you’re experiencing?
  3. Write down exactly how you feel without judgment.
  4. Pause to gain perspective.
  5. Keep writing. Get it out of your head and onto the paper.
