University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center uniquely offers the intimacy of a community hospital with the power of a high-caliber medical institution
By Laura Briedis
At University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center patients get the personalized care of a small hospital with all of the advanced technology and services of a large hospital. It truly is the best of both worlds.
“Heading into 2024, we are growing as a teaching hospital, have added a second surgical robot, and are always hiring more physicians and staff,” says Jason Glowczewski, who started his career in leadership as a pharmacy manager at the University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center in 2006 and now is chief operating officer of University Hospitals Conneaut, Geneva, and Geauga Medical Centers. “Through all our growth, we still provide that same exceptional care with a welcoming feel.”
Teaching Hospital Status
UH Geauga Medical Center recently became a teaching hospital, which includes seven residency training programs with a combined total of more than 100 residents. What does this mean for patients? They get extra care.
“We are a teaching hospital with medical residents working alongside our physicians,” Jason says. “These residents have graduated from medical school and are completing their training in their chosen specialties.”
Resident physicians are constantly learning and refining their skills under close supervision of an attending physician, taking what they learned in medical school along with the latest research and bringing it to the bedsides of patients.
“This adds another member to the patient’s care team and elevates the level of care,” says Marlea A. Miano, MD, who is chief medical officer of UH Geauga Medical Center. “They are using evidence-based medicine to provide the best care for patients.”
Extended Medical Services
UH Geauga Medical Center is not your typical community hospital. It has a wide scope of services in more than 50 medical specialties.
“The emergency department often is the intersection of all the services offered at the hospital,” Dr. Miano says. “We are a Level 3 Trauma Center, so we are equipped to respond 24/7 to serious traumatic injuries caused by high-speed motor vehicle collisions, farm machinery accidents, falls and other blunt or penetrating trauma.”
The hospital also has an accredited chest pain center and breast center, a certified stroke center, and a cardiovascular pulmonary rehabilitation program, as well as a cancer center.
At the core of all its services is leading-edge technology. “We have enhanced surgical capabilities with our two surgical robots that assist with minimally invasive surgeries, resulting in great patient outcomes,” Jason notes. “You don’t have to go to a bigger hospital for this type of technology. We have it right here in our community.”
Always Hiring
“Like many large companies, we are always hiring,” Jason says. “Many of our employees work and live in same county, so there is a sense of community where it is rewarding for employees to take care of friends, families and neighbors.”
Most recently, two new oncologists were added to the staff and the center is always adding nurses, technicians, pharmacists and other medical specialists.
“Our staff takes pride in offering personalized care,” Jason says. “When you walk through the door, you are treated like family.”
