To provide expert care close to home, the University Hospitals Lake West Medical Center opened a neurology clinic in August as an outpost of the UH Neurological Institute.

“We have added neurologists to our Lake West staff to serve both patients admitted to the hospital and those with neurological conditions seeking treatment in Lake County,” says Cathy Sila, MD, chair of the Department of Neurology at University Hospitals. “Patients don’t have to travel to our downtown campus to get the same expert care, as our neurologists on staff are fellowship trained and experts in their field. We are bringing the academic main campus expertise to this community.”

“Our physicians are part of the local community in more ways than just seeing patients, as they really become engrained in the community,” says Dr. Sila, an internationally recognized expert in preventing and treating stroke, neurologic complications of heart disease, and defining outcomes for clinical trials.

University Hospitals neurologists are experienced in treating a range of brain and nervous system disorders. This includes conditions such as chronic headaches and migraines, epilepsy and seizure disorders, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders, Alzheimer’s disease and memory disorders, stroke, and brain tumors.

To assist physicians in diagnosing and treating neurological conditions, UH Lake West Medical Center has advanced technology, including electromyography (EMG) diagnostic examination of the peripheral nervous systems and electroencephalogram (EEG) brain wave testing.

“We also offer neuromuscular ultrasound, an emerging technology,” Dr. Sila says. “This is a breakthrough in diagnostic technology that is well received by patients. University Hospitals and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine is recognized for its national expertise in this technology.”

When to See a Neurologist
A neurological condition is one that affects the brain, spinal cord or nervous system. A number of neurological symptoms could point to possible problems, including frequent headaches, balance and movement issues, memory problems, seizures, numbness and tingling.

“Patients should seek treatment if they have any symptoms, as many conditions are easy to diagnose and there are a lot of treatment options,” Dr. Sila says. “If you have any stroke warning signs (sudden weakness on one side of the body, confusion or difficulty speaking) you should immediately go to the emergency room.”

Meet University Hospitals Neurologists
The University Hospitals Lake West Medical Center is on the grow as it welcomes two neurologists to its staff.

Anthony Zampino, MD, who specializes in neurology-neuromuscular medicine, received his Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from the University of Akron before completing medical school at Northeast Ohio Medical University. He then completed his neurology residency at Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, where he served as chief resident.

Dr. Zampino has a special interest in the use of neuromuscular ultrasound to enhance traditional electrodiagnostic testing and research for autoimmune neuropathies such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, as well as exploring its use in clinical trials.

Dasul Jin, MD, who specializes in neurology-vascular neurology, studied brain and cognitive sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for her undergraduate education before earning her medical degree at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.

Fluent in English and Korean, Dr. Jin works with University Hospitals’ multidisciplinary teams to optimize patient care for all patients presenting with acute ischemic stroke at UH Lake West, where she ensures high-quality stroke management is provided for everyone in need.

“We are excited to add Dr. Zampino and Dr. Jin to our team as they are both brilliant and excellent communicators,” Cathy Sila,MD says. “They care so much about the field they have chosen as a career.”
