This time of the year Medina Public Square looks so magical, all aglow in holiday lights. And just three blocks south of the square, VCS Salon & Spa is helping clients put on a glow all their own.

“When people walk through our door, we help all their stress melt away,” says Coleen Mahoney, who, along with her sister, Mary Kay Hallas, owns the salon. “We want everyone to look and feel fabulous.”

A fixture in Medina for 43 years, VCS Salon & Spa strives to create an upscale atmosphere that is not uptight.

Exuding an urban-modern rustic vibe with a pretty palette of gray and terra cotta on the walls, nutmeg leather styling chairs, a stone accent wall, gray and brown wood-hued flooring, and a touch of bling in the chandelier, the salon is energized with stylishness and elegance.

Featuring both salon and spa services, VCS’s menu includes haircut and coloring, manicures and pedicures, massages, body scrubs, waxing and makeup.

“We have started to do more hair extensions, as we have more hair designers certified in this specialized service,” notes Coleen. “Hair extensions are perfect for those who want to add volume or length. They are also a good option for those who want to add highlights or color, but don’t want to put a lightener in their hair.”

VCS Salon & Spa has a large retail area showcasing professional beauty products. This month, the salon is selling holiday gift bags that make fun gifts for everyone from a girlfriend to a teacher, a babysitter and even your favorite server.

The salon also offers eyelash extensions, from the most natural to the most dramatic looks, and lash lifts.

“A lash lift is like a perm for eyelashes,” comments Coleen. “It gives your lashes a wonderful curl, making your eyes look more expressive.”

VCS Salon & Spa also has a large retail area showcasing professional beauty products. “We always encourage people to shop local and support local businesses,” says Coleen, who is a graduate of Medina High School and champion of everything local.

These at-home beauty kits are available in five different themes, and you can add a gift card as well. For example, the Post Workout Essentials kit is tailored for the fitness buff, with a hair refresher, dry shampoo and a scrunchie. And the Happy Hands Kit is filled with a homemade sugar scrub, hemp lotion, nail polish and a roll-on cuticle oil.

“Last year was the first year we made these holiday bags, and they were such a big hit that we could not keep them in stock,” notes Coleen. “So, this year we are making some extras.”

VCS Salon & Spa has 30-plus employees on staff who all have different expertise and skills that contribute to a creative work environment.

“As our clientele keeps growing every year, we are hiring hair designers, nail technicians and massage therapists,” says Coleen Morlock, salon co-owner. “We are a place where employees can further hone their skills, as we have our own in-house training academy for hair designers.”

To stay at the forefront of trends and techniques, VCS Salon & Spa’s comprehensive training program offers hair designers hands-on training so they can develop advanced technical skills to complement their styling prowess.

“We are always welcoming new hair designers to our team and helping create new jobs in Medina,” says Coleen. “With our in-house MBA (Masters in Beauty Academy) program, we create opportunities for hair designers to become leaders and provide a place for them to grow professionally. This also assures our guests that they are getting the best trained and educated hair designers in town.”

Led by salon co-owner Mary Kay Hallas, all new hair designers go through extensive in-salon training after graduating beauty school. Working as a team, these protégés work hand-in-hand with the salon’s master designers to perfect advanced hair coloring and cutting skills.

“We provide a great work environment that extends beyond our salon doors,” adds Coleen. “Our company is invested in our local community, and we use our gifts to help others. In doing so, we attract employees who are passionate about causes beyond their craft.

“We are always volunteering to help others, whether a community event on the Square, teacher appreciation nights, girls’ leadership events, and so many other ways to give back to the community.”
